How Many Times Do You Have to Hit The "Back" Button?

So it started as just a little aggravation because I had to hit the back button twice in order to get back to "New Posts" after reading a post. Now it's up to three times and it's just pissing me off. It doesn't happen on my iPhone but it happens on my desktop at work and my laptop at home.

Who else is having this issue?

Yes, I've rebooted.

Reboot your device and start again. It happens to me every now and then also.

I get that, too. Remember not too long ago the site was "upgraded" to work better for phones and pads and such. But that was to the detriment of desktop users. This just must be another iteration of how it's forsaken us.

I've had it happen from time to time, but most of the time I usually right click the mouse on the back arrow, this causes a drop down and then you can choose how far you want to go back.....

Apparently IE 11 doesn't have that option

I reboot my work computer at least three times a week. That's not the problem

I use Firefox, and I encounter this issue on any number of sites. All you have to do is, instead of clicking on the back button, put the mouse pointer on the back button and then press and hold the button. As noted above by CRUZN 66, this causes a dropdown menu of the most recent 20 or so pages to appear, and then just move the arrow down to the page you want to go back to. Very simple. Very effective.

Google Chrome is almost as simple, except you have to click on "Show Full History" which brings up a new page showing all of your page visits in reverse chronological order, and it goes back days.

I don't have Internet Explorer any more as I've upgraded to Windows 10, and IE is replaced with "Microsoft Edge," which I haven't played with yet.

I don't think this is a "problem" in the sense that it's unintended. I think some web pages purposely reload themselves several times specifically so you won't so easily leave the page by hitting the back button.

In other words, it's not a bug, it's a feature, although not a popular one.

I'm having this problem along with the inability to open thumbnail photos. The advise to reboot works but only for a while then the problems come right back. You shouldn't have to repeatedly reboot your computer to view something, these problems needs to be fixed.

And today I have to click three times for it to go back, this after being on the page mere seconds.

I got it now so now I only have to click twice instead of three times, assuming of course, I hit the correct web page in the drop down menu. It's still a PIA

No. You click once if you're doing it right no matter how many pages you want to go back.

1. Put the mouse cursor over the back arrow.
2. Press and hold the mouse button.
3. Move the arrow down to the page you want to go back to, and then let up on the mouse button.

You go back to that page. One long mouse click.

I'm happy now. All I had to do was change the way I've been using a computer for the last twenty years so I'm compatible with the way this site operates. .

Not to say it's not a bad way to do things, but come on, this site has stupid issues that I don't experience anywhere else. I shouldn't have to use a work-around to get results. The advertisers certainly pay them enough, how about fixing it!

This is not a workaround. This is not a bug on this site. This is the way websites operate. I find it very convenient to be able to click-and-hold on the back button and go back to any previous page I want. It comes in very handy, and it's not any trouble at all.

I understand now.

It's like clicking "start" to shut your computer off.

You have to admit, after 20 years some things do change, some for the good and some for the not so good..... But I will also have to say, I have had this type issue with other sites as well.... that's why I usually just right click the back arrow and choose the location I wish to go back to, works all the time, every time.....

Click and hold and go to history if you want to go WAY back. I was surprised
on how far back it will take you. Nice tid-bit. Thanks Dan.

I don't know why this bugs me as much as it does, but I hate the way it is working now. Maybe it is the ads on the top/side refreshing with no noticeable change on the forums? It wasn't this way a month ago so something changed. So, whoever is in charge, please change it back!

I actually open each thread I'm interested in, in a new tab, so I never have to deal with this.

This site continues to be a problem, at least now the pictures open about half the time. It's true the glitches are minor irritations but I look at this site daily along with four other forums and this is the only one with these issues. We should not have to change browsers, reboot, etc. - Admins, is anything being done to fix this?

=====================
We have a winner
That's what I do
peruse the New Posts
see one that needs attention?
Right click, open in NEW TAB
then tend each one, and close it as need be, and the tab of New Posts is always still there.

I use IE at work and Chrome at Home

This is what I do to and works well. You can also usually just hold down the "command" button (if mac user) or Ctrl button (for PC) before clicking a link to automatically open it in a new tab. At least this way you never have to worry about hitting the back key.
