1972 Side Stripes

The side stripes on my 1972 Cutlass Supreme are vinyl tape. Should the stripes be painted or vinyl from the factory? The assembly manual shows painted. I don't remember the car being repainted.

The optional factory side pinstripes were painted, not vinyl decals.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought. Yesterday I looked closely at the CS and I cannot see where it was repainted. I could not find any overspray on the trim (where it would have been taped) nor any paint seams. No overspray on rubber, inside fenders, etc. If it was repainted, the person removed all the trim and did an excellent job of protecting from overspray. In the spring I will get it cleaned a do another close inspection.

So the tape stripes were added by a previous owner over the original paint.

Joe,
My late brother bought the car new. I doubt he added the stripes. Could the car been ordered without stripes and the dealer installed the vinyl stripes? Is the stripe shown on the build tag? Signed...stumped in PA

I've made some before using standard vinyl. It came out pretty good. I used the original measurements.

With that information, my bet is that the dealership added the vinyl pinstripes to "spruce" it up, as many did at that time. Sorry to read that about your brother.

I had a 72 442 W29 car with the side stripes and they were all vinyl on the sides and on the hood. It was a one owner car when I bought it and had never been wrecked or repainted.

I wonder if some had paint and some had vinyl stripes. I can not remember what plant that car was built at and would guess California as I bought it in Oregon and it was bought new in Oregon and was not a W30. Don't have any of the old records from it. Sold it back in 83.

Curious if anyone else has a car with documented history or like a family owned car that had vinyl stripes.

As I asked in a previous post...were the stripes an option or standard with the 1972 Supreme? The Supreme in the 1972 sales brochure does not show any stripe. But one cannot rely on the brochure pictures to be accurate. The assembly manual shows painted stripes.
At this point I am going with the theory it came from the factory without stripes and the dealer added the vinyl stripes. They look identical to the painted stripe. BTW, it was built in Lansing.
