What type ATF to use?
What type ATF to use?
What type and brand atf should I use for my 67 TH 400. The trans has never been rebuilt.
I looked around and have been slightly confused by the choices that are out there.

It probably used an early Dexron fluid type I, II, III. My brain only goes back to Type III so I'm not even sure if I and II were made.
Regardless of all that you can use any Dexron made today as they cover all previous versions. Is it Dexron VI now?

I think they are up to Dextron VI now. The newer versions are supposed to be backwards compatible, but who knows. I've read that GM has stopped licensing the name "Dextron III", which is why that version is difficult to find.
Dexron IV is automatically a synthetic blend and a thinner weight. I have had no issues running it but my transmissions had fresh seals. I would just get any brand you like of Dexron 3 and you will be good.
Just to bust a few chops -
Someone brought this to my attention a few months ago and I didn't believe him... untl I checked:
It's DEXRON, not DEXTRON.
I know. I grew up with everybody saying "Dextron," and must've read a thousand bottles and cans on shelves and in my hands over the decades, and I never once read the word correctly. Until I was corrected here.
Go out to the garage and look at a bottle.

I worked in an auto parts store in high school so I became very familiar with the labels on all the cans I had to put on the shelves and stack for displays. Customers probably asked for Dextron but since we had so many folks calling stuff by wrong names I wouldn't have really noticed.
Back in the late '80s I worked as a fleet mechanic for a carrot farm, Bunny Love Carrots. They don't exist anymore but the company that bought them out still uses the name for their organic line. Anyway, we used Dexron II for everything, bought it in 55 gallon drums. Ford, Chrysler, Mercedes, even manuals. Non GM vehicles would have the transmissions drained and the fluid replaced with the Dexron. The shop managers said as long as all of the other fluid was removed the Dex would work just fine in all of them. I guess it did 'cause we had fleet vehicles with over 100,000 hard miles on them.
I was corrected on the name at a young age when I worked at Cal Auto Parts, back in the late '70s. The boss was kind of a jerk about getting all the names right.
