I hope you all can help me with this. I am putting together the pulley system for my 350 and this is how it is currently lining up with the crank pulley and the water pump pulley.
To rule out the wrong water pump neck length I am certain this water pump is the exact same length as the original. I ordered this one and when I received it I set the old and the new side by side and they were identical in every way.
Am I missing a shim or something on the crank pulley?
When mounting the generator neither slot lines up and as you can see these are off by about one complete belt pulley width.
There is no shim on the crank pulley. I would say you have too long of a water pump, just think about, line everything else up. I know there are at least 3 different lengths. I find once anything is moved from stock, Olds pulley set up can become a nightmare fast. I may have to invest in the Dayco laser belt aliner.
The thing is, I set the two water pumps side by side and everything was identical - even the height of the pulley on both pumps (height as measured from the pumps laying flat on a table top). If they are the same size on the table, it would stand to reason that when mounted on the engine they would be the same measurement. I will measure the distance between the two and post here in a minute...
Was this a complete running engine with these exact pulleys and the old water pump in place before you rebuilt it? You haven't swapped any parts?
Look, it's physically impossible for the crank snout or balancer to shrink, so SOMETHING isn't right. Ether that old pump WASN'T correct, or, well, it wasn't correct. There aren't a lot of options here.
Well, as it turns out I have missed the mark again. I don't know why the measurements seemed right and even looked right before installation, but it turns out that the water pump is 1/2 inch too long. Crap.
Sorry for wasting your time. Anyone know where I can get the one that is actually what I need? The old one turns out to measure from the base (where the gasket goes) to where the pulley bolts to is 6 inches and the one I have from that same distance is 6.5 inches.

I don't measure, I just set them side-by-side on the workbench.
Measure like as shown on this page http://www.oldsmobility.com/oldsmo/v....php?f=6&t=391. I'm guessing you have a 6 " and need a 5.5. . If you go to a site like rockauto you can see what they have for options for your water pump. They don't list by size, but if you do need a 5.5" one I'll guess your car has AC. OR HD cooling. So order the appropriate one.

My question is that if the block was decked and the heads were reduced to about 60cc per cylinder with pistons that have about a 16cc dish do I need spark plugs that are shorter than stock plugs? I see them in lengths ranging from .375 to .750. I am looking at the NGK plugs...

Be aware that the 70-older water pumps have a larger (2") hose nipple vs. the 71-newer pumps that have a smaller (1.75") nipple.
Thanks Fun71! I found one on Summit that is 5.09 in length (what I need) AND has a 2" outlet!
Now, if I may impose, could you please explain to me what the "reach" is and if it affects how deep the plug goes into the cylinder? I saw several options that have a reach that ranges from .375 to .750 inches. I'm not sure what the reach affects...
If you use the factory application then the plug should be the right length. If you've ever seen a head off with the plugs installed you would notice they don't reach very far into the combustion chamber, so your heads being 60cc and the pistons having 16cc dishes should mean there's plenty of room for plugs with the factory specs.
If you are choosing a different plug and are trying to match it up by thread size and reach, then I would look up plugs for the application and see what the reach is on them and use the same length for the plugs you are looking at.
