trunk trim

lots of good info here ! question, on a 70 "Cutlass" not F85 or S, would the trunk have that chrome moulding on the lip, and continuing on the edge of the fender ? would there be the rocket surround on the key hole ? would the Cutlass name appear on the bottom right corner ? if the car is a W-30 or W-31, how would that apply ? I'm confused by this.

thanks, Mike

A 1970 W-30 would only be a 442, and all 442s got the thin chrome at the bottom of the trunk lid.

Cutlass and Cutlass S coupes and convertibles also got the thin chrome strip with the Cutlass emblem and the rocket medallion around the trunk lock.

Good question, I have a 1970 pace car and there is not rocket emblem around the trunk lock. I really think that is attractive but would not want to add it unless it belongs there. So...according to Joe, it looks like my car should have it--nice! Thanks Joe!

Actually, I can't say for sure. If your pace car is a 442, then definitely not. If a Supreme, I don't have good info. Regular Supreme convertibles did get the rocket emblem around the trunk lock in 1970. I've seen photos of Supreme pace cars that did and did not have it. Unfortunately, none of those are official GM photos, so that isn't really proof. I do know that the Rallye 350 cars did not get the emblems or the thin chrome strip on the trunk, no matter what the base model, so there is precedence for Olds deleting trim parts on certain RPO codes. Sorry, but I just don't have better data on this.

Thanks Joe. I always loved these cars but never looked that closely at the small stuff before. From now on, starting with the nationals, I will be more observant for sure. Mine is a Supreme model, not a 442. One of the previous owners was more interested in fast than original so some liberties were taken. I will be spending the next couple years fixing the former owners sins LOL
