1970 c/s recent purchase
1970 c/s recent purchase
I spotted this car on ebay in june of last year, having had an original 70 442 convertible back in the mid seventies ,i was looking for one again now that i turned the big 6-0. i really didnt want a tribute car at first(this is a w30 clone) but when i saw the recent prices of 442's i knew they were out of reach without a remortgage. this car was local so i went to take a look. this owner has had the car for ten plus years and put less than 5k on it.the body panels were all straight, lines were good, but the paint...ugh. it was painted in a 71 color-sable brown with gold stripes with more orange peel than the minute maid factory! interior is saddle brown and is in very good shape.the car has the following power options windows, trunk, cruise control (disconnected).other options include rally pac gauges, sport steering wheel hurst dual gate with w26 console w25 hood and oai air cleaner(these are all originals, not aftermarket, but no a/c.now to the good part i crawled underneath and the cars has the 12 bolt w27 rear axle!,complete fe2 suspension with factory control arm braces and no rust or rot anywhere.come to find out the 2nd or 3rd owner (from canada,i'm the 5th) cannabilized a 70 w 30 post coupe rust bucket? for parts and put them into this cutless probably in the mid to late 80's.the paperwork from the 3rd owner to the guy i bought it from states that the 455 engine was rebuilt by beatty and woods in toronto. (cant verify yet) other factory w30 parts include clutch fan,red fender wells 4 row radiator and the rear end. btw the engine is a seventy 455 per the vin derivative . but the heads are E, so i dont think the engine came from this w30 although it also has the aluminum w30 intake. so i got the car in december,shoe-horned it into my garage and im just know getting a good look at it. I think this could have been a cutlass sx at one time with the interior options and the fe2 suspension and all, back thirty years ago when nobody knew about SX's (well maybe a few smart ones had heard of them) also the engine vin does not match the car.so all in all what i have hear is an oldsmobile mutt with a lot of rare parts that i will probably de-clone into what i dont know yet but i couldn't be happier with my purchase. i will try and download some pics. thanks and hello... Alan Hamilton
cutlass
have recently changed all fluids. car has 3:42 gears and OG thm 400 ,unfortunately the guy i bought it from threw away Qjet (really?) and replaced with an edelbrock, hence the rubber gas line. all that remains of the cruise control is the switch on the dash, the rest is long gone but everything else works the top is old but works fine and all the pwr windows are slow but go up and down
Actually, the SX did not include the FE-2 suspension, it needed to be ordered separately. I personally like the color combination, it is a very rare to see Sable brown with gold stripes on a '71 442. Looks from the photos to have '71 sport mirrors and W-30 intake manifold. Your car looks in great condition and has the W-27 added bonus. Perfect time to buy a convertible. What color will you repaint the convertible when the time is right?
Hi anthony, thanks for the nice words, your right about the suspension, this is a 1970 c/s with some very nice upgrades and its the closest i'll ever get to the 70 442 convert i had back in the seventies. the car absolutely screams and highway cruising is a pleasure. it will need paint and some bodywork in the future. sable brown was not offered in 1970 but it was a 71 color . i would love to go with 1970 nugget gold with black stripes to go with the saddle interior but this color is starting to grow on me.... Alan
Hi olds64,yeah its going to need more than a buffing,it has drips and a few blisters in the fiberglass hood some bondo between the trunk and the top but again from what i can gather the paint job is over 20-25 years old and i'm ok with that.....thanks for the welcome
more pics
hi Oldsdave,i sent more pics of my cutlass but they went to my profile page under photos, some of the pics are from the previous owner.the newer ones have the trumpet exhaust...btw the matador red 442 was the one i bought used for $1500 back in 1974 had it 4 years and sold it for $1500...and i remember thinking i scored back then because i didn't lose any money on it. lol
upon further review
when i first went to see this car, i brought some magnets with me to check the body panels for bondo or any filler. when i crawled underneath and saw that big silver pumkin i took the magnets out of my pockets and voilla! none of them stuck to any of the housing. i was thrilled. like i said earlier i'm just now getting a good look at the car now with the rainy spring we've had around boston and today jacked the car up and got underneath and got the casting numbers: "402227" iron carrier...took a stronger magnet to it and it stuck like glue. my lesson learned is to make sure to verify before i post any info and i appolgize to all CO members for wrongly jumping the gun...you know the saying if it seems to good to be true....
