Picture of the rims I have. There isnt a code by the valve stem like I would have thought. There is a code on the back outer edge of the rim. I think they are an aftermarket over the counter rim but am unsure. Any help with IDing them would be a great help. They are 5 on 4 3/4 bolt pattern and holding up my 67 GS 400.

This is the correct SS1 for 1970

 

They sure look like SSIs to me. If they are Olds wheels, the all-chrome rim was only used in certain years. If they are 14x6, they would be 1967s or 1969s. If they are 14x7s they would be from 1971.

 

Thanks for all the replys! If they are Olds rims would they have a code stamped in them and where would it be? Also, I noticed that the valve stem doent look to have the same angle on these rims compaired to the factory Olds rims that I have seen on this sit. Help please!!

 

Hard to tell for sure from that pic, but, it looks like a Magnum 500 to me.
Got into a similar conversation on ROP recently.

The wheel is dated October 7, 1968, which means it would be for a '69 model car. It looks like an SSI rim for drum brakes to me but the "60" code throws me off. There should be a "LE" code stamped somewhere in that area as well - that would definitely make it an SSI wheel for drum brakes.

Thanks for the info!! I have to admitt that the rims I have look to have the contour of the Mopar rim, not the originial Magnum 500 rim. Where the valve stem comes out is at about a 45,degree angle to the face of the rim and the stem comes out at an angle? The originial Olds Magnum 500 rim looks more like a Buick rim? These are not the same. HELP??? Could the 60 code be for over the counter sales only? I know they dont work on my duel piston caliper setup but have not tryed them on a single caliper setup? HELP!!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!!

 

The original Olds rim does not look like a Buick "road wheel" other than having five spokes. The Buick rim spokes are concave (curve in) while the Olds ones bulge out just like the rims you are showing on your car. These rims were produced for several manufacturers from Ford to GM to Chrysler to AMC, but I believe the bolt patterns are different on most of them.

 

I learned something this morning doing some homework to help you out.

Your rim code is M48 10 7 60. That decodes to:

M = Motor Wheel Company (versus a K for Kelsey Hayes)
4 = U.S. made (versus a 5 for Canada-made)
8 = 1968 (for a 1969 model car since it was later in 1968)
10 7 - October 7
60 = 6.0" - 6 inch rim width

Gee, the SSI's, magnums and Buick rims are pretty damn similar wouldn't you say? (inside joke)

 

The rim in the pic I posted above as a Magnum 500
still had the original Magnum 500 sticker on the inside of the rim.
It has the 45 degree slope on the surface where the valve stem is located exactly like you mentioned.

The Buick wheel is NOT the same as the Magnum 500 OR the SSI.
The center hub sections of the Magnum 500 and the SSI are identical.
The outer rims are the difference.
