WTF! That angers me when I see things like that... 77's are pretty rare, I don't see why they'd make it into a "truck." Those panels look great though, if he wasn't asking so much I'd buy them for my '77.

I feel the same way when people put the 17" rims on the cars. It is if they are saying they have no taste, no talent and are not really a car guy. It’s like fat women who drink cokes all day long and use the elevator to go up one flight of stairs but they wear huge amounts of jewelry and act as if they are no different then the trim fine looking woman who goes jogging every night.

Suffice to say the 17” rims say “I am compensating for a lot of things; it’s all I can do!”

Any way an era car looks right with era size style rims. Just like a 2007 BMW looks right with bigger profile rims as it was designed that way.

SO does that mean that Chip Foos or Boyd Coddington have no talent or taste. I see them put 17"+ rims on the classic cars they design. To each their own I guess.

I like much of what Chip foose does but yes I think the weels often spoil the car and make it look cheap. It just looks like cheap jewelry from a bubble gum machine!

so if you had a 1970 cutlass what kind of wheels would you run?

my dreams are to get some american racing torq thrust II's 15x10's in the back 15x8 in the front, but would that be to small, also i have the car lowered on eibach lowering springs like 1.3 inches i believe.

what do you guys think?

Like I said, to each their own brother. Not trying to start a flame fest here as a new member.

Hey Shak,

Not sure if your reply was directed to gow or me, but either way here is what I think would look sharp.

http://www.billetwheel.com/cgi/wheel...ollection&tn=1

I like the Junk Yard Dog, very similar to the Torq Thrust II's, and the Sultan Old School Finish. I would probably go with the same staggered with on wish list, but I would probably go with 18" in the rear and 17" in the front. The larger wheel size would make room for some bigger brake rotors to slow that beast down. I'm sure your dream Olds will go as fast as it looks. With the Eibach springs you mentioned I think the stance would be sinister. Just my .02

Subjective as color of paint. I hate anything bigger than stock, maybe could go to 16" in a pinch on the 70's muscle cars but that's just me. If we can share our likes and dislikes without flaming one another (which I think we can and have, so far), then it's all good........

To each his own correct. My opinion is just that and I am not trying to pass it on otherwise. Call it old school if you want but I am not that old and I think the term more of a cliché. I think what I like and appreciate is the first 70 years of cars and the styles that came through. They really reflected modernization process of our society. Some where in the 70’s cars became throw away and generic. I think of cars such as the late 70’s Mustang. This began a time where the only thing you can do to make a car is change the rims. Besides that they became throw aways; like cell phones. Good one day and crushed the next. Cars like a 69 olds, 70 Chalenger, 57 Chevy, 32 Ford, etc are the “Originals”. Even the era hot rods were originals which reflected a growing industry of hot rod parts and ideals.

I am not pushing for 100% original (except for cars which warrant it) but when a 69 Camero has 17” rims I just want to puke. They turned an “original” into the equivalent of a throw away cell phone or a fat lady with jewelry.

I would rather run around in a 4 door Buick then a 69 Olds with over sized wheels. When I see the flashy rims out today it just looks ridiculous; total lack of style.

I am taking an old mid engine ford back to the styling it had when they raced lemans. I spent for ever and a lot of doe finding stock group 4 15” racing wheels and 4 down draft Webbers. But when it comes together, MAN I can see the guys racing the cars 35 years ago! The guys that put the 17” rims on them make the cars look like what the kids drive cruising K-mart!!!

No flam’n here. Just point of view!

I get where you are coming from gow. However, it is tough to show any talent if you are are only doing the same traditional setup that has been done for the last three or four decades. How much talent does it take to do the same thing over and over again.

I can appreciate the traditional or stock set up on a car that you are trying to make as a reminder of the original. However, those cars rarely see any street or track time. They are usually trailer queens. When you get your mid engine Ford done (GT40?) are you going to drive it? Taste and style aside, I bet if the original designers of the car had larger wheels with modern casting and metals available they would have taken advantage of the increased performance that a larger wheel provides. I guess it all depends on what your goals are. I get trying to find out what your hero's felt 35 years ago. Just make sure you don't miss out on what the heros of tomorrow are feeling today.

Actually a thinner bigger tire does not mean better.

The car is a Pantera. This before I started:

This now:
http://www.rc-tech.net/cars/panttran.../blast/sb4.jpg
These are the wheels I got for it:
http://www.detomaso.nu/pantera_gt5_bild1.jpg

Pay no attention to the color of carbs. I am going to re-paint them:
http://www.rc-tech.net/cars/panttransam/1905/webbx.jpg

I am not going back red. I am making something between a vintage racer and a custom car. Probably a 2-tone.
http://www.supercarnet.jp/File/File-...so/Pantera.jpg
http://www.velocetoday.com/images/March%2005/r7.jpg

I am putting in 500hp engine, race cage and making a 100 changes. Removing a/c, adding oil/trans coolers, chassis stiffners, re-move/new gas tank, suspension changes, and on and on.

I just got back off a trip. Drove through a rough part of indy. Guys with 18-20" rims on cars left and right. We were laughing our as& off. I don't think I am missing anything.

Best reguards, Gary

In the end it will have the look and feel of the era but it will be unique and modern.

Should be a sweet ride when it is all said and done. It is hard for me to picture anything other that what you have chosen for that particular ride. I like your selection better than what was on car in the the original picture. I want to see some photos/video of the finished product when it is all done.
