Barn Find 1936 3 window business coupe

Hello Folks,

I am Jerseychuck from eastern Pennsylvania. Several years back I was lucky enough to be driving down a country road when when a couple of older gentlemen were pushing a '36' business coupe out of a barn. Made a deal, took her home and is now running. Odom shows 23,000+ miles and is working. No wear on rubber pedals and still has original floor mat w/o wear. Everything is there. Glove box had 2 small boxes of chicklets, a comb, 2 drive-in movie stubs, minature golf pencil and a small 6v bulb. She has quite a few coats of paint. Original color was tuscany brown.

The engine has no paint on her and I was wondering if anyone had a source for the darker green engine paint?

Thanks for any help or replies,

Chuck

Here's a pic of the one that I bought about twelve years ago. It had a 53 olds v8 and a 52 olds rear end that were installed in 1959. It was last driven in 1962 and then a house was built around it. I had to remove a sliding glass door from the side of a basement to get the car out. The car was a street rod time capsule. I sold it to a friend who still has it. I just didn't have the space, money or time to do anything with it back then. ~BOB

I love the variety of cars on this forum.

Beautiful coupe sir. I know you said brown was the factory color but it sure looks good silver.

If the grille is original to the car it's an L-36 = straight eight. Nice car.

She's a straight 6. What's the difference in the grilles from a F36 to an L36?

Look at the horizontal bars in the car in the Carshinebob post that is a 6 cylinder grille. I don't know about 36 grilles but only 8 cylinder replacement grilles were offered for 35's after 1939 from Oldsmobile. The grille in your car was replaced at some point and the 6 grille may not have been available.

Thx Gary for pointing that out. Never stop learning about these old cars.

I see the double horizontal cross bars vs the single cross bar.

Did people actually start these with a crank? Mine came with the crank that appears to have never been used. I've fitted it thru the grille into pulley on the end of the crank and tried to turn but 'holy mackeral'.

Yes , Most GM cars ( and trucks ) were equipped with cranks in the trunk , along with a jack and tire tools . Up until about 1940 .
I had a 1935 Chevy that I actually started with a crank , when the battery failed .

I notice that the windshield split moulding is missing on the silver car looks like someone replaced the windshield with a one piece glass.

Just a thought. Should you ever try and start your Old's with the crank for some reason be sure to place your thumb on the same side of the crank handle as the rest of your fingers not wrapped around the handle like you would hold a Coke or shovel. Should this car ever kick back with your thumb in the wrong position it will break your thumb or wrist. Something that was important when i was a kid and every tractor on the ranch started with a crank even the 30 Cat we had. I haven't thought about this for a number of years.... Tedd

When you see these cars with the bottom of grille broken out that usually was from trying to start them with a crank. Don't use the crank.

Tedd and Gary,

Being 67 years old, the crank will stay in the trunk. smile face.

That's very cool. I heard that manual crank cars were dangerous if started incorrectly.

You're about an hour or so north of our shows. We do have members in your area as well in Sellersville, Telford, Landsdale etc. that regular come out to our shows, so maybe an opportunity to caravan.
