Neutral saftey switch cutlass 1974

Hi again everyone,
last time your help was really great so i m asking again your help.
I replace the link wire and then everything worked.so i tried to run the engine, and it didn''t start but it was close to !
then i tried again today, and i still have power everywhere, but when i want to tunr on and start nothing is happening. no starter click, no solenoide click.
at the coil power (+) i have cheched and i have 7v, i think is great. and i have look a t the neutral safety switch and i have 12.5v at the purple/white wire but nothinng after on the green/black wire (when i turn the key like i would run the engine)see the picture is the thread, if i m thinking great maybe the switch is dead ? or it could be something else ? coz yesterday i tried many time to run the engine so i was thinking that is the problèm.
the green/black wire is going to a another relay or fuse connected to a purple wire that is going to the solenoid.

so if someone can help.
thanks to you

The green/black wire is another circuit, the purple wires are for the neutral safety circuit, the yellows are for backup lights. The only time you will have power to the purple is with the key in the start position.

ok but the green / black wir eis going to a another relay where the purple wire is connected and going to the solenoid.
so what do you think my problem is ? when i m in start position i have 12.5 v at the purpple/white wire.

Don't worry about the other wires, the purple is what your concerned with. The switch in your picture operates both the neutral safety and backup light function (plus the key minder I guess). If adjusted correctly everything should work. If the switch is in the park or neutral position or if you jumper the 2 purple wires and turn the key to the start position the starter will engage. I do not have a wiring diagram for your car.

It appears the green/ black wire is going to the turn signal flasher, a purple wire from the turn flasher to the hazard switch.

The green wires are the backup lights. Your diagram does not show what the yellow ones are for. The diagram comes in clear.

I hope this diagnosis page is legible, I believe it refers to what Oldcutlass suggested above. I posted 2 pics in the event 1 is better than the other.

Geez I don't know, it looks like the yellow runs wipers/radio/, maybe this will help,
Looking at the instrument panel wiring the leads are listed as follows doesn't show me colours.

Seat belt warning lead

Stop lamp switch lead

Ignition switch lead

Neutral start switch lead

I agree the drawing shows the yellow wires powering all that, however it does not show any yellow wires connected to the neutral safety switch.

The diagram shows a purple with white tracer (it says DBL white, wonder if that means double white wire?) coming from the ignition switch going to the neutral safety switch, and then a solid purple from the neutral safety switch to the starter solenoid.

So i check the power is coming from the purple white wire from the ingnition commutator, the greeen wire is for parking position and for neutral, the pink for the back light that i think . coz when i follow the green black wire is going to a relay ( i think the starter relay) see picture and the pink one is going too. and when i put R on selector no light is on at the back. and i have power at the greaan black and pink and yellow one. the 2 other wire i don't know really waht they are use to.
I thnik that relay is the trouble thas is dead and not giving power to the purple one who is going to the solenoide.*

There are a few other connectors that use purple wires. Look at the schematic, the only thing in between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid is the neutral safety switch. That is your issue, nothing else if you jumper the wires and the engine starts.

what do you mean by jumpering the purple wire? plug the wire that is going to the solenoide directly to the key start?

Unplug the purple wires from neutral safety switch. Unfold a paperclip and stick each end in the plug where the purple wire terminals are, connecting the 2 purple wires together. Then turn the ignition key to the start position and see if the engine starts.

I found this wiring, and looks like the good one. coz on the other one i didn't have the yellow wire from the solenoid to the ingnition coil. and i see on it the resistance wire too.

That's because the other one is for an HEI distributor, and apparently you have points. Your car is a 74, his is a 76.

so today i remove the starter and the yellow wire going to the coil was nearly cut, i tested the starter alone like this and it s worked well.
so i replace everything with new wire and clean the starter and connection, and then i turn the key and it worked too. so i was happy , the engine is still not runing but that is not the problem. when i wanted to tunr back the key to on, again nothing happen. i found relaynear the engine with start wrote on it.
And now i need to turn the key for power push the button on the start relay, and turn the key to run, to get something.
what do you think about this, is it normal?

Someone added that relay its not original equipment to the car. Its a there for trouble shooting purposes to manually activating the starter. It possibly can be causing your issue depending on how its wired in. Hook a voltmeter or test light to the purple wire at the starter and have a helper turn the ignition key to start and see if you have voltage there. You possibly may have a bad solenoid at the starter.

i have someting at the purple wire coz when i turn key on, then i push the button and the i turn the key to start, and power is going to the solenoid and running the starter.
there is the same wire going there like my neutral safety swith. like in the picutre, the purple, the green black and the pink one.

The button bypasses the neutral safety switch and provides power directly from the battery to the starter.

ok, so it's not normal to need to push the button. But i tested my solenoid starter with a battery, it's running well.

Eric far de it from me to correct you, but that switched relay is OEM. It is part of a safety circuit I. Case you have a small child or package on the front passenger seat that trips the weight sensor but doesn’t have the seat belt on. It allows the safety to be bypassed in an emergency to let you drive. It’s a 74-5(iirc) only package. Son”if” the seat belt module that’s under front passenger seat is defective...tripped etc them pushing that button will allow emergency operation of the vehicle. But only once, **** it down and you’ll needTo push the switch. It acts as a latching relay circuit. Brett
