Sway bar in the rear, and a larger 1"? one up front. Heavy duty shocks... It's better documented on www.73-77olds.com.

73 Cutlass
Don't know about the "old thread" but found this board today. I have a 73 Cutlass that I've had for about 3 years now...bone stock..found it in St. George Utah...71K miles and absolutely rust free (no humidity to speak of in St. George). Does have dual exhausts with dual chamber magna flow's so got a little bark to it...runs like new..350 4bb....we have had a couple of 73 Cutlass's in years past as just old driver cars...this one is nice enough it turns some heads.....we are old folks (80) so just like to cruise now and then and get some ice cream or a burger...I prefer the body style of the 73 with the fender outlines...think they are unique and great looking.

I still have my ORIGINAL owner (me) 76 S, factory 5sp that I special ordered new.
I wanted a 442, but I just could not go for that big UGLY vinyl stripe/442 along the side and that big vinyl 442 on the trunk lid (WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHROME 442 EMBLEMS ON THE FENDERS??????????? DID OLDS LOOSE THEIR MINDS?????????).
The 70-74 Corvettes with a 454 engine had individual 4-5-4 numbers on the hood, so I went to Chevy Parts dept and ordered individual 4 and 5 numbers and installed them on the fenders just below the Cutlass S emblems. Looks like factory emblems to me.
I wanted a 455 and 5sp, but the 5sp was ONLY available with the smaller engines. So that's how I ordered it. I also had to order other options which were standard on the 442 package, such as sport steering wheel, sport mirrors, wheels, etc, etc. So I got the small engine, 5sp, posi, AM-FM 8track, tilt, clock, and a few other misc things. But stayed with the bench seat. BIG, BIG, BIG MISTAKE----------I ALSO ORDERED A VINYL ROOF (big fad in the 70s)-------------THE RESULTING RUST IS NOW A HARD LESSON LEARNED!!!!!!!!!!
Several years later, I STILL wanted a 455, but I had already gone through 3 of that puny 5sp!!! So I needed to come up with a stronger tranny to stand up behind a 455. The Richmond Street 5sp was the answer and I built a 455 in 87.
About 4yrs ago, the 455 was having some issues, so I pulled it and rebuilt it to W30 specs with Edlebrock alum heads and intake and repo iron W30 exhaust manifolds.

Side stripes on the 76-77 442 are ALL painted from factory, no vinyl. Trunk lid call out is a 3M applique/sticker as are the door handle body color inserts.
Very nice car, welcome.

Whether it's factory painted or a big vinyl decal, I did not like it and still do not like it!
The chrome 442 emblems that were used up through 75 were a MUCH NICER emblem.
Oh ya, and I DO NOT like the big bird on the hood of a Trans Am either.
I used to be on here several years ago, but because (and I WILL NOT elaborate) of unfavorable past attitudes, I quit participating.
A few weeks ago, I met up with Eric in Texas and he REALLY ENCOURAGED me to get back on the forum. Sooooooooooooooooooo, we'll see.

Different eras as they made things to appeal to people. I grew up with my 76 cutlass 442 and its paint scheme. The body shop painted the deck lid 442 on my car, looks alot better than the decal.
The paint schemes and such employeed in the mid 70s went from nice to overly dramatic. Where we all stand on where the over the top mark, is different.
With my 76 442 I enjoyed being a stand out in high school driving it around. Enjoy still being a stand out at the car shows with its style.
Thanks for info on your 76 Cutlass S. Will have to look at the that transmission option if my overhauled TH350 fails behind my 455. I would rather have the 4 or 5 speed with the 3:42 ratio..

New to forum and new 77 owner
Super happy to be here. Really excited to learn more about my 1977 Cutlass Supreme. I am about to order rear springs and shocks ( mine are shot ) and hoping someone could help me with part numbers or links to the stiffer wagon springs. I have 15" 255/55/70 in rear and need a bit more lift and rigidity.

There is a typo in your rear tire size.

Hello and welcome here!
350+350?
Also, does the picture lie, or are your wheels at rear with "wrong" offset?
With "wrong" i mean, does your tires hit fenderwells if the rear goes down enough on, lets say, when driving too fast to speed bump? Asking, since i have 255 wide tires too ( 255/60/15), and they fit well inside fenderwell without scrapping

They barely rub the inside lip only on the passenger side because that spring / shock are more worn than drivers side. The backspace is a bit off but I LOVE the way the beefier back wheel line up almost to edge of the body lip. I plan for a heavy duty spring and shock. Like a ridged chopper; the absorption can be taken mostly in the front.

From the answer of Geezolz, it hits a bit.

1977 Cutlass "S" I found in Phoenix Arizona for $2000.00 on EBay. I called the owner and he had bought the car brand new. The paint was burned off pretty bad but hardly any rust on the car at all. Since I have owned it, I have had it painted, new interior (which is mostly complete now) and put a slightly modified 455 in it along with beefed TH350 trans and 3.31 posi rear. It needed the posi. I have been very pleased with it.

We would also like to know what parts you used to beef up your th350 when you get a chance.
Looks like a really nice comfortable ride .

[QUOTE=DZAUTO;1061059]The following is a comment made to me (from a member in VA). An example of what I was referring to.
[quote] Then you have no clue about production tolerances or reliability.
Fair anuf, I don't think that would be a reason to leave one of the best all Oldsmobile guy/gal forum on the web.
Most, I say most guys here are always ready to give some insight or advice to any given question asked in all categories.
All have a true passion for all year Oldsmobiles.
Hang around and you'll find the above statement to be true.
Their are no others like this out on the web, so kick back, as your questions, answers questions if you choose and enjoy the greatest Oldsmobile experienced fellas around.
Many friends are here that we never knew we had, that's until our question gets answered
Enjoy your time here, you won't regret it.

Things I've learned in the last few weeks. 1-7/8" headers for a 455 do not fit on a 73-77 Olds. I found one thread on the 73-77 olds Forum that agrees with what I found. Engine Cylinder #4 - which is the second cylinder from the front on the passenger side - when using 1-7/8" primary pipes - hits the (hits a lot) the mount for the rear of the lower control arm. I'm using Hooker 3202 Super Comp headers.
The one thread I found on 73-77 Olds mentioned he tested headers built by Nick when he was with Kooks and they did not fit. Nick had no intention to make them fit. This tells me Miller, who now has the Kooks plans, will not fit either. And I'm guessing ARH will also not fit, since that is Nick's company.
This same thread on 73-77 Olds says 1-3/4" headers will fit.
I'm doing mods to the frame, and might also have a new pipe welded on the header to get around the issues. Based on how my engine was built 1-3/4" is too small for my build.

aftermarket weatherstrips are available- fitment varies; some like it , some don't. I used nos on my 74.
Seat material may be available; seat trim and other interior trim will be hard to come by, especially for 73, which might have some one year only pieces.
Carpeting is available; package trays also. there may be some aftermarket door panels made for cheby , etc that might be made to work, but I don't know for sure.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people here and at the 73-77 list though.
Good luck..
