I swapped to power steering but having trouble. it steers harder than before. How can I tell if the pump is working? The only thing I did different is coil the pump hose for better appearance. I don't thing this would cause a problem. what else can I check that would cause it to steer real hard? it was pretty hard before change maybe something else wrong. this is on 70 442.

 

The correct hoses won't be long enough to "coil". Do you have some sort of aftermarket hoses? Are you sure you have the pressure hose connected to the correct port on the box (the smaller one). If that's all good, I'd suspect a bad or misadjusted output pressure valve on the pump.

 

You may have a kink in the hose you coiled and possibly some air in the system.

 

I thought the pressure line was supposed to be the larger port. if you are looking at the box from the front of the car which port would it be, lower or upper.

Which is to say that the hose on the right of the photo (going to the fitting on the left of the photo) is the feed hose.

How did you bleed the system after installing it?

I jack the car so the wheels are just off the ground. Start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times until the steering frees up. When I had too tight of a bend in my return line I had similar issues as the OP.
