I am a newbie here and have been reading a lot about the 455 for the past week. I bought a 455 to put in to my '64 c10. I got the engine dirt cheap, knowing it needed some work. I do not plan on building it for hi performance, just to get it running good and strong. The block looks to be good and the top of the pistons have 30 stamped on them (assume they it has been bored 30 over)
After getting in to the engine it looks like I will need a few things, stock parts are fine:
1. a new set of heads or at least just the passenger side head (can be bare)
2. Possibly an intake manifold (may be able to save it by cleaning real well)
3. Working/rebuildable 4bbl. It did come with the adapter plate to fit other (non Qjet) carbs
4. Probably more as I get into the bottom end. I don't have an engine stand yet.
I live in SW Missouri, zip code is 65745. If you have any of the needed parts lying around and they are in good condition please let me know.
I'll be more than happy to give you my number to text me. I live in the boonies and texts get through better than calls.
Although 36 years old I am new to the engine world, but I have always loved old cars/trucks. And the bigger the engine the better!
Welcome again... Looks like a nice ride for that 455 to find a home... Good luck with the project... I think you might have some luck finding the parts you need here on the site...
First of all, Welcome to the site. It looks like a "J" head in the picture. I would retrofit some earlier heads, like "E", for a little better performance, since you need one anyway. Are the pistons stock type low compression? See if you can read a part# on top of the piston. That's a nice looking truck that you have. Good Luck! with your project. Bob.
Yep, J heads. I will get the code on the current head as mentioned above and post on here. I know the heads are going to be heavy so shipping will be killer.
Also, are the stock exhaust manifolds ok to run? The crossover pipe has been pinched and welded closed. I've seen a lot of long tube headers online but they look like they'd hang real low.

Why wouldn't the stock manifolds be ok to run? There were millions of Oldsmobiles built with them.
If you must have headers, Sanderson sells center dump shorty headers for the Olds 350 and 455. The only difference between the two is pips diameter (1 5/8" vs. 1 7/8"). They also make shorty rear dump headers, but only in the 1 5/8" tube size.
I worded that wrong. Are they ok with the pinched/welded crossover tube?
I'm not sure what "pinched/welded" really means. The factory just used a flat cap on the passenger side crossover port. Many people fabricate an equivalent cap by cutting the end off the crossover and welding a round piece of plate over it, as seen in the last photo.
That makes sense. A previous owner of my 455 looks to have cut the crossover tube about 6" from the flange, pinched the tube shut, and welded it. Not the best look but should work the same.
I am near Wichita . I have a set of E heads and a stock 4 barrel intake. Also have the turkey tray never been used. PM me with your cell # if you are interested.

Here is a picture of a piston.
You can barely see a 30 stamped on it.
