I thought belts didn’t last very long if they were oil soaked. So is the block modified to keep oil away from that area?

Yes, there’s topically a seal behind the drive.
These really help reduce harmonics. Good to see this for Olds community.

Thanks for the info. I was originally looking at the picture on a phone and couldn’t see as much detail as I now see with a larger screen.

That was my thought as well but this looks sealed. GM has a belt for the oil pump on the back of the 3.0 inline 6 diesel. Every 150,000 to 200,000 depending on the year, pull that transmission to replace it. Ford runs wet belts on some applications which seems insane as well. Pretty much running these will come to track on a trailer or see limited street miles then the track.

I like my gear drive assembly on my old IH IDI turbo diesel !! My old VW uses gears also, requires some precision block machining though.
