I cannot fathom the idea that a W27 differential would increase an A body GM product $10,000...Then again I would choke at the $5000 current market rate.

Curious, which of the three ratios would be the least expensive or easiest to find?

^^^^THIS!^^^^I would definitely by a complete one for that price. I have paperwork for my W-31 that shows it originally had the SZ code W-27 rear in it but I either can't get people to sell one or they want crazy stupid money for them! Hopefully I can talk someone out theirs one day to make my car correct and the way it came from the factory!

The ratios will not affect value because they are so rare. If a guy wants one he has to buy the one available whatever the ratio is. The 3.23 is the most rare.

I'd be more quiet of the fact that you need one for a car that had one. That may instantly make the price go up when inquiring

You mean a guy will sell one of these on the cheap if the guy buying it really does not want it? Is that even possible? If that is the case then I would not take on of these if a guy paid me to take it off his hands! Is that better? I believe honesty is always the best policy. It may be an outdated concept today and probably just a cheesy and trite overused statement, but it has always worked for me. I will probably never be able to buy one anyway because most either will not sell their "HOLY GRAIL" part or they want a lot more than I can justify paying for one, even if I can afford it.

This was meant as a joke hence the wink face. I saw one a year ago for sale sans axles and gears, the housing looked reproduction and the axle tubes ad fresh plug welds in them. guy was asking $4,ooo ish for it. I had heard before that someone had reproduced the center sections at one time.

The only way I would want one is if I had a car that was documented as having came with it. If I had a car that was documented as to having one, then I would step up,if I just wanted to be the only guy on the block with one, then no. There are more of these rears that what came in cars. When Jimmy Weibel was racing Olds, they sent them to him by the pallets full. If he broke one, they just replaced the complete unit, not just the gears/posi. Are they rare, you bet they are but there's some still around.

Reading my mind.....I was thinking at 2500 a pop Id start up a foundry. Once perfected to handle 1000hp Id then ship the manufacturing over to... you know were to get them down to 500....not!

Eric, I know I saw some documents somewhere on what was produced but is there a list of how many of which gear were made? I'd agree that out of the few I have seen in person or read of most are 3.42s or 3.91s but would love to know how many of each were made.

I don't think there is a brake down of it. The 3.23 were found in the A/C cars and most people wanting the W-27 didn't want A/C.

Though I have only seen 5 in person on a car

1 had 3.23 with AC
2 had 3.42 with AC
1 had 3.42 no AC
1 had 3.91 no AC

As mentioned before there are 3 of us on here who have/had convertibles with AC and 3.42s. It does seem that most cars I have seen images of with W27s have 3.91's in them and no ac (obviously)
