72 Olds Door Thermometer

I am looking for a nice thermometer that mounts in front of the driver's side mirror of my 72 H/O.

Hey Indy Guy! (i'm visiting friends IN INDY NOW for New Year's so felt compelled to TRY and help ya out! ) I ran across a guy who had one for a '72 Ninety-Eight BUT i think he wants huge $$ for it...I've never seriously looked for one so dunno....would these ALL be the same or fit the same for the Big Bodies and Mid-Sizes?? (IF they fit I'll try to find his card and maybe we can get him to lower his price some; it looked NICE from the photos; was NOS....) Good luck and let me know. Happy New Year too Guy!

They are identical for all series.

Expect to pay way too much for one if you find it. The Olds community has gotten stupid over an option that was unpopular when new, never mind it was only $14.00 plus .3 hr installation time. That's why there are so many NOS ones in the market now- nobody wanted them back then.

THANKS RocketRaider and GOOD to know they're the SAME for ALL series! VERY interesting though, about how everyone says they go for a fortune now! I'd like one too but I can't spend serious $ on something that frivolous....anyway; 'IndyGuy' let me know if you want me to research my lead on that one more.

Hey guys, I may be able to help here. I have thermometers on both of my '76 Ninety Eight's and I think it's a very cool option. Keep in mind that they may be the same between full and mid sized per year but not every year was the same. The earlier ones mount in front of the mirror, like you said Indy Guy BUT the later ones (I think starting in '74 maybe?) mount inside the base of the mirror itself (on full size). Aside from that difference, these are illuminated with the dash lights which I'm not sure about on the earlier years (are they??). I think the colors are slightly different too but I can't say for certain.

As for the popularity of these, I don't think that the fact that they're not overly common makes them a less desirable option at all. A lot of the less popular options are very desirable because they're not seen all that often. My car is full of options that are not overly common but I love having them all.

Also, when shopping for these, keep in mind that GM sold a lot of these with a generic thermometer because they fit Buick's and Caddy's too so you may not always find one with an Olds rocket. Sadly, original ones are usually in terrible shape but sometimes you get lucky and find one intact. The generic ones have no logo and just a decal that could best be described as nothing more than circles.

The thermometers are correct for all series. The later ones in the base of the mirror came out in 1978 I believe and were on full size cars only.

The thermometers were offered with a black background for the dial and white numbers, and also white background with black numbers. It's a huge debate which is the early style and which is later. The thinking is the black background is the earlier one, but I have an NOS black background one with templates to mount them on 73-77 model year cars, so who knows.

The other posts are correct, they do sell for stupid money. I have a used one in decent shape I would sell if anyone is interested in it. I think it's a black background one but not positive. I haven't looked at it in months. PM me if interested.

NOS Thermometer on eBay

Not my auction but just an FYI.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1970-197...b7a3a9&vxp=mtr

NOS Oldsmobile thermometer (black dial with white numbers). Price starting at $370 with $12 shipping. The price seems like alot but the fact is this is what these sell for. I've seen a few NOS ones over the years sell in the $350 to $425 range on eBay. Incredible since they were something like $14 from the dealership parts dept. back in the 70's!

Does the thermometer go behind the drivers mirror or in front of it? Looks like the direction for the Toronado has it in front of the side mirrror.

The thermometer mounts an inch or two in front of the mirror on the driver's door on all models. Exact dimensions depend on model.
