Note that the 67-69 O-Type above uses axles with sealed bearings and the oil seals pressed into the ends of the axle tubes.
The 1970 housing uses the same open style axle bearings and oil seals as the later 8.5" 10 bolt rears, with the oil seal sandwiched on the axle shaft between the bearing and axle retainer.

The carrier and gears are interchangeable between the two styles, but axles, axle bearings, and axle seals are not.

12 bolt o-axle housing

Location, location, location! As others have said, "where are you located?" I have several 8.5" "12-bolt" type "O" axle housings, parts and complete units, down here in South Central Florida. Please let us know where you are. Thanks, Bob.

I just pulled this out of a 68 Cutlass. It's an open rear with 2.78 gears. I'm located just north of Pittsburgh.
