Hello: There are slight differences between the 71 and 72 core support. They have to do with the grill area. The outboard curves in the grills have a corresponding inset in the core to accommodate the grills. I have a 71 core support, but you should be looking for a 72 to keep the car original. Hi Bob: That one looks to me to be a 71. Are you sure it is from a 72? I think someone on this site posted close up photos of the front for comparison purposes. The differences I know about are along the grill surface and that is hard to see in the previous post from Bob. I agree with oldyolds you want to keep the cars as original as possible. Hi oldyolds: Excellent photos and some good research. I thought there are some detailed photos somewhere. It is that curve at the outboard side of the 72 grill that makes quite a bit of difference in the core support. It is amazing that GM spent so much effort to make the 72's changed from the 71's especially considering that the 72's were scheduled to receive the colonnade body style which got delayed one year due to a strike from the unions. So even with the strike, quite a few changes were incorporated into all 72 GM A Bodies. The 68 - 72 followers are lucky to have the extra year and more selection. Good luck with your search. I have at least one '72 core support here in Indianapolis. All of them need some/more work in the battery tray area but otherwise usable. How is the battery tray area in yours? If it is good, you could cut & paste onto one of mine??

Yeah, I was talking about this with my brother today. He use to be a 71 Monte Carlo guy and he was telling me how common it was for certain things on these older cars to change from year to year back then without necessary remaining consistent for several years at a time. It definitely can make restoration more challenging.

I have found the core core support I needed. It's an exact match without much battery tray rust. I got it from an Olds guy out of Greenbay, WI. He also hooked me up with a bunch of other parts I required. It took some time to figure things out but it was worth the wait. The seller was very honest and knowledgeable about these cars, which was a boon for the novice like myself. I would certainly use him again.
