Wanted 70-72 flywheel inspection cover

Looking for a 1970-72 Oldsmobile flywheel inspection cover for an M-20/21/22 transmission. The Oldsmobile inspection cover has a U shaped relief in it for the starter motor and the cover can be removed whereas the Pontiac cover you have to cut it to install it unless you remove the starter. Most the access covers I see are Pontiac. Nos (part number 406273) would be great. Let me know what you have. Thx, Al (email: alsutton@shaw.ca).

Al, I think I know the answer but are you looking for NOS/OEM or will a re-pop suffice?

Rick I would be happy with a nice original one. I don’t believe there is a repro and if there is it’s likely a Pontiac copy which is incorrect.

The Pontiac unit has a different shape where it fits up to the rear of the oil pan. The Olds has a smaller opening where the Pontiac has a larger opening @ the oil pan. I think the Olds originally had the closed opening for the starter like a Pontiac and most cut the top part off so it could be removed without removing the starter.. I think I have one for an Olds that is open or cut off like you want. It's used but in good condition. Contact me @ pchopesq@aol.com

The Oldsmobile flywheel access cover was not closed like the Pontiac one. It was open from the factory and has an unusual U shape to that opening for the starter.. There are a few other differences one being the smaller opening at the pan as Mike mentioned above.

Rick most do. Yes I’d like to find the right one. Will anyone else notice that it’s right? Not likely. Lol

So this is wrong? I never knew that but it does seem that the starter would have to be removed first order to get a look if it doesn't have the U opening?

It’s just not an Oldsmobile access cover but a Pontiac one. Most people use that one and cut the circle end off. With the original ones you could inspect your flywheel or clutch without removing the starter.

Are you referreing only to 70 - 72 Olds inspection covers as having the U shaped cut out or does this include the earlier years (66/67) also?

I just looked at my parts book (printed September 1973) and the part number 406273 is the same for V8 from 1966 74 for ST (standard transmission). It does also show that number for the 1964 with the 400 cu in motor. It’s a little confusing around 64-65 and there is some * of clarification.

I restored my 72 flyweel cover and it doesn't have the same number you're looking at.

Fresh off the car... YUCK!!

After cleaning all the yuck off and then sprayed with degreaser

A coat of Plastic trim paint...

That’s because you have an automatic trans cover not a 4 speed. Look above at the posting.
