Wanted to share some info and pics on the 69 rings....

I have 3 nos, boxes dated 1972. Part # 545910 which is shown in the 72 dated parts book I have.

See photos...

One other bit of info, this # also shows it as used on Pontiac wheels in a cross reference manual ( GM ) that I have.

These are not brushed, but have a nice polished look to them. The photo is a NOS piece ( yeah, it is twisted a little...)

Exactly the same trim ring as the pics of the piece I posted that I was told were wrong for 69. Guess I do know what Im talking about!

 

I still have some more things to check. So I feel a bit premature to say this, but so far, what appears to me is that the NOS rings are not the same as what were on the cars originally. This was not at all uncommon. I'll cite brake/clutch pedal pads and door sill plates as examples.
Note the great pics that Tom just posted. There is a "fan" of integral attachment tabs. The original rings had separate attachment clips.
Among other things, I'm in the process of gathering period photos and such. Will definitely check back in when I have anything more definitive.

I am not to dispute that parts listed in the book were not always used on the car from the factory.

However, I will tell you this...I am the second owner of a 69 w30 that I purchased in 1983, and the ssll's and 2 of the 4 original trim rings that were installed on the assembly line are still on the car today. They are identical to the rings I photographed and posted, even the serrated mounting tabs.

Thanks Tim. Glad to have that input. We need to have input to help sort things out. It is a matter of truth, not who is right or wrong, so we should consider all input. Please don't take this the wrong way, but from a cold evidence standpoint, I can't be certain from what you said that you would know what your W30 was delivered with. Maybe you know more than you said. Absolutely nothing personal, but peoples memories are not infallible and sometime events are not remembered or remembered in accurately. Or presumptions are made. I've seen more than one case of "I know the original owner and he said that's the way it came" where it just wasn't true.
So all of this needs to be taken into consideration when trying to come to an objective conclusion.
What I'm saying is not directed at you in particular, Tim. Again, it is not a matter of who is right or wrong. An objective evaluation is not always as easy (or pleasant when people take offense) as it may seem.
This doe not mean, Tim, that what you said is not true or that I believe it is not true. And is certainly is good input.

 

..... just thinking out loud, but somone might want to start a '69 SSII trim ring titled thread in "wheels/tires" since this started as a '68 trim ring WANTED ad. ??

Any '69 parts books out there? Maybe an early/late deal??

I looked at all the '69 a-body ads/brochures at Wildaboutcars & they appear to be brushed and/or polished (same as) '68 style. & I understand these are probably pre-production cars with not quite ready for production pieces.

Yes, I have a '69 parts catalog and will check it.

 

Pic of one of my '69 trim rings, as pulled from the car today. Car was ordered (window sticker) with these N66, and I purchased the car from the second owner, who bought it in 1971. I cannot unequivocally say that they are the original trim rings. Hope it helps.

 

Pictures from my Sept. 1970 dated parts book. There is a note pertaining to the 69 trim rings. (w/16 serrated teeth). Usually an added note means there were more than one variation, or a change from the original part. I believe more than one type trim ring was used on the 1969 wheels. Probably an early, and a late type.

 

That's possible, mine is a 5/69 build date. I guess that there would need to be info on a early dated ring, if that were the case.
