Thought I had located a good used tank for my 56 Olds 88 but it turned out to be from a 55 which I understand will not work.

My original is long gone so any help locating one would be greatly appreciated!

You best bet may be to find out what other GM models of the same design period used similar parts and go from there. I've found a lot of times when you virtually can't find the exact parts for a particular year/make/model that cross referencing period models of the same manufacturer works out

AHHHH just run a fuel cell in the trunk!

 

The fuel cell deal actually crossed my mind but the car is way too original to do that to it.

Anyone know what other make/model tanks (if any) are the same?

Well, I 'think' I found a tank that will work. I 'fit' it last night and it is just a hair too wide but otherwise fits well. I will bend the lips up just a bit and it should clear the spare tire well and the opposite side (ds) spring perch.

I think maybe it was from a 98 instead of an 88.

Found an old guy that had alot of old cars and he had a "Brand new" original, never used tank.

It is in great shape except for the obvious evidence that a mouse was living in it and one hole the size of a nickel which I will fix.

The tank was stored on end and I think that either water or rat pee collected in that one spot and rusted it.

I have also ordered a fuel sending unit off ebay. Anyone have experience with those (guy is from Wisconsin)?

 

lol, sending units are fun :P just be careful not to tear the sock, and make sure the ring makes a tight seal. I messed up on mine once and had gas spilling everywhere when I drove up a steep incline.

 

Any idea where I can find the fasteners that hold the sending unit onto the tank? The guy I got the tank from did not have them.
