Standard set up

It depends on how correct or right you want it,but the price is up there. In 1971 the Muncie that went into the Cutlass & some 442's was an M20,with the fine-spline input, and large output, like the TH400. The W30's got the M22.
In 1970,everything got the course-spline input,and smaller TH350 output.They offered the M20 & M21.
In 1972,everything got the M20,with the fine-spline input/large output.
The 70 & earlier 4-spds are a little more abundant, thus a little cheaper to buy.If your car is a bench seat, and you are leaving it that way, then no cost needed for a console, and you will need the bench/non-console shifter. The steering column is the same as any 69-72 floorshift A-body,auto or stick, but the switch at the bottom is specific to a 4-spd.

Feeling it out right now!
It is a bench seat car.If I did go that route I would put a 4 or 5 speed tranny it does'nt have to be stock.I would love to have the console and buckets I think I need to start buying the pcs here and there.I have a 308 in the rear. The rear end is from a 70 chevelle and the tranny is from a 72 olds. The junk yard I go to has a 67,68,69 console I believe it is yellow would anyone swap a 70,71,72 console? Thanks for the help!

You have an advantage of starting from scratch. If you are planning on a 5-spd,you can place the hole & the shifter hump where it needs to be for the shifter to come up through & function properly. Most 5-spds have the shifter positioned slightly farther back, compared to the 4-spds.You might also have interference with the shifter hitting the bench seat.If you went with bucket seats, you could put it anwhere, and if you go with a console, you can also install the boot assmbly farther back on that, and do it with a regular console, instead of modifying one already done for a 4-spd,as the opening might get too big on the body of the console, and then the boot assembly wouldn't cover it.
Nothing wrong with the 3:08 gear. You could even run a typical M20 wide ratio munice with that.If you do go with a new 5-spd,or some type of aftermarket 4-spd,you will have more in that than a nice rebuilt Munce 4-spd.Just keep doing some research & keep crunching numbers, and you'll end up with a good gameplan.
