Both wheels were available in 1971 SSI with the trim rings and without 14X7. My car has the trim rings but I like the full chrome ones better. Difficult to find in good original unpitted shape and some of the companies that sell the repros have had problems with egg shaped. Do your homework and you can get a nice repro or original set. The ones in the CL ad above look like Buick rims to me.

the way I understand it .....
The "normal" 14x7.0" SSI for 1971 use a trim ring, but due to UAW? strikes during the model year the quantity available at Oldsmobile or directly from Motor Wheel Corp. (the manufacturer of "SSIs" & aftermarket "MAGNUM 500s") was limited.
So, to keep the assembly lines running & building 442s (& Cutlass) all-chrome "MAGNUM 500s" were installed. In the past, I've seen mention of a specific number of cars equipped with the all-chrome SSIs & the dates when the "ISSUE" occurred.
Here's a 1971 4-spd W25 442 with its original all-chrome SSIs.

Ssi wheels
The 1971 SSI wheels came with or without trim rings. The advantage of these is that they will fit disc brakes, whereas the earlier SSI wheels will not. Scarebird does make brackets to install disc on an earlier car that will have clearance to fit under the early wheels. However, if you want SSI wheels without the trim ring and original 4 piston disc brakes, you need the aftermarket or original 1971 SSI wheels.
