sport mirrors for 72
If you have any junk yard near you 70-82 camaro firebird use the same mirrior as 71-72 cutlass/442. They use a different gasket/shim under the mirrior to hold the base at a different angle. The cutlass gaskets are available aftermarket. I think in around 76 and up the passenger side started using a convex mirrior with the "Objects in the mirrior..." text.
You would be right. The bases changed for later model years to match height and angles of body contours. The base gaskets are flat. Never seen any wedge shaped OEM gaskets used to compensate for these mirrors.
73 and up a body changed the base. I see a lot of the the 73 and up mirrors incorrectly added to 71/72 a body's. Look at a Camaro mirror and a 71/72 cutlass mirror and show me whats different.
The camaro mirror mounts to the door with a bracket on the outer skin of the door and a screw that goes through the base into that bracket. 71/72 cutlass mirrors are the same. 73 and up mirrors use studs going through the door with nuts on he inside.
Parts numbers may be different but I have had both in my hands at the same time and they are identical.
Anybody have pictures of the different bases? If I'm wrong I would like to learn what's correct.

The gaskets place the alignment peg in a different location.
The earlier Camaro/Firebird mirrors are the same. I think when they changed to a studded base, they enlarged the bullet. It's hardly noticeable, but if you take a bullet from a 71-72 mirror, and compare it to the later one,the later one is slightly larger. They also started printing the "objects in mirror" on the RH glass.
Some of the late 70's A-bodies and 80's B-bodies had remote sport mirrors on both sides. I took a pair of those bullets, mounted them to 71-72 bases, and installed them in a 71 Cutlass. The RH side came with a real long cable, and U was able to mount it on the dash,in the area if the radio.

So the 71/72 cutlass used the mirrors with the bracket on the door right?
I've never seen any camaro mirrors with the studs like the 73 and up cutlass mirrors.
So the camaro mirrors that mount on the door with the bracket are the same as the 71/72 cutlass mirrors correct?
Long ago I bought a pair of 72 442 sport mirrors off ebay for a project. I paid around $100. The add showed pictures of the mirrors mounted to 442 doors. The next weekend at the local boneyard I noticed the camaro mirrors. I bought a set on half day for under $20 and compared them. They were identical. At first I thought maybe I got ripped off so I started comparing pictures online. Like I said before more then a few had the 73 and up style mirrors which made me worry more. Most cars had the camaro style mirrors. Eventually I found some info on ROP showing pictures of the different gaskets but identical mirror housings, base, and brackets. ROP has since crashed and the info is gone now but that's what I remember.

So the white mirror with the studs is the 73 and up style mirror. The brown mirror is the 71/72 style mirror right?
Every 70-82 camaro/firebird with sport mirrors I have ever seen match the brown mirror. I have never seen mirrors that match the white ones on any camaro/firebird.

I was told they were Camaro mirrors but would fit my 72 Cutlass. They look the same to me but they have studs for mounting to the door, whereas the Olds mirrors have a bracket that mounts to the door and the mirror attaches to the bracket.
