Open Face alternator

I still have the 1100853 dated 8G11, but I think you said this is too early of a date for you. Since this was the first year the internal reg was used, I would think the production of these would have been started sometime earlier than normal to ensure reliability of a new design. The core I have is original even the reg and rectifier. The inspection stamp is also still visible. The reg is dated 8F27. The early regs were black and they later went to white regs. The early internal alts also had a different rectifier, battery post, and insulating design. If your alt needs rebuilt, later design parts can be used and will fit perfect if the right post and insulators are used. If you want to keep the guts of the original design, I also have a set of the reg and rectifier and diode trio from the original design with the reg dated 9E02

Thanks for all the replies. Stellar, I forgot I posted this before and we discussed your alternator. I have an open face on it now, but I would like correct numbers closer to the build date (04D) of 1969. The 69's have the funny fins on the back.

I have a picture of the finned rears. There is a bolt boss that is raised onm one,and flat on the other, and also a different location.I will try & post it. Here is the rear of a later open-face,dated May 5th,1971.

That picture is incorrect. That picture is of an externally regulated alt The 10DN. The 1100853 is internally regulated a 10SI. My camera and computer skills stink, but if you go to ebay right now and look up 1100859 you will find 2 alternators. These are corvette alts. The one with the black pulley and fan has the correct rear finned housing for the 69. It is the same housing used on the 1100853. You will notice there is a threaded mounting hole located almost 180 degrees from the plug connection. The threaded hole is also almost flush with the rear of the housing.
If you look at the other alt (garbage) you will notice the threaded hole on the rear housing is about 45 degrees from the plug. It is also raised as opposed to being almost flush with the rear case. I know there are no fins on this one, but if it did it would look like the other rear finned housing. This housing is completley wrong being it should be finned and have the hole located almost 180 degrees from the plug and closser to the surface of the alt case. I hope you understand what I am trying to say. If not I will try to send pics. Mark

I am trying to post a picture of the 2 styles of the finned rear covers, but it is telling my it's invalid to upload.
The picture above is not an Oldsmobile-specific alternator, but it is an open-face.I am just trying to show some differences. Here is a picture of the front of the alt pictured above. This is a # 1100927 1E5

tried pics but upload failed and I am lost to post pic. $895 kind of makes you want a vet doesn't it? I have one that is all original a survivor it even has the same date code correct fan and pulley too. If you want it I will sell for less than $895. The $300 for the junker is the real shocker.

I'll try reposting the other pictures, and I will get pictures of all of my other open-face units. The Vette guys drive the market up on these.I Usually pay $200.00-$300.00 for a correct open-face core, depending on what number it is,application, etc. These were also found on the GTO's,Firebirds,& Gran Prix.My first 71 442 AC car,had an open-face alternator on it,but the numbers traced back to a 71 Pontiac.I always wondered why it had a 2-groove pulley.

I made a list last year,of all the distributors that I had,but since then,I got 3 more.I think I have 8 of them, but some of them are for my cars, and they are probably the same ones everyone else is looking for.

I'm only 34,but I have parted almost 40 of these cars, and I have owned & still own a good amount as well.I am very picky about what I keep.I have parted some real rare stuff too. When I started doing this in the early 90's,I could care less about parts like alternators, starters, carbs, and distributors.I'm sure I let a few get away,or scrapped, but it wasn't long before I realized that everything is something. For awhile,I went hunting for cars to part-ouit,and went to swap meets & such,so I accumulated a bunch of stuff by the late 90's.Every once in awhile,I would thin a little out, always keeping the better stuff for myself.I've had my fair share of NOS parts too.I have NOS core supports for 70 & 72,as well as OAI hoods, and all the other body panels.I had an NOS F-head,in the GM packaging before.etc etc.Any time I get something better, the one at the bottom of the food chain goes.Any time I do a car,I take each part, and every match I have, lay them all out,and pick the best one, then onto the next part.Yes,it takes me forever to finish one,but I like to do things one way. I'm sure my 72 in my signature may make some think that I'm just a racer, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.Even that car is considered too nice to race by some.Yes,I have a lot of parts, and some super-nice cars. It's just a passion I have. It's my way of turning back the clock,to times that I would have liked to have been part of,but heck,I wasn't even thought of yet.

I started at age 3. My dad would sit me inside the engine compartment of our 67 Ford LTD,and I would hand him tools, and observe everything he did.We last rode in that car sometime around 1986.We had 2 other 67's,two 70 Buicks, and two 75 Buicks, while groing up.We always ended up buying a parts car for the good car that we drove. You see where I learned that from?I still have that 67.It just sits in my mother's garage.I just like to look at it.Someday,I'd like to go all-out on that. It's big.
