Need V8 Starter Brace
#3
A lot of those starter braces were thrown away when a starter was rebuilt or replaced. They weren't absolutely necessary, it was an extra step in the disassembly/assembly process, and a lot of times the replacement starter didn't have the threaded hole where the brace attaches. Starter braces are available, though. I've seen them on ebay. As well, Fusick offers a 64-75 V8 starter "shield", described as a "shield between the exhaust pipe and starter as well as a brace from the starter to the frame". I'd call it more like a brace between the starter and the engine block - my "shield" isn't connected to the frame at all.

I've come across two different styles used in the late 1960's and early 1970's. One is thin, maybe one inch wide and thicker than 1/8" steel. The other is similar thickness but much wider, maybe 4-5 inches. I'm not sure which style was original with which years. John

In 72, there was a 3" wide one for 455s and 1" skinny ones for 350s. The 455 bracket doubled as a heat shield to help prevent starter heat soak problems.
(not sure about all the other years)
I would install it if you can...

both my GM Illustration catalog and A Body assembly manual show a narrow brace. The GM Parts catalog lists one part number (551159) for all V8s from 64 to 75 except 75 400.
not long after purchasing my 71, I had to replace the starter because of a cracked nose. Yesterday while replacing the positive cable I notice a crack beginning in the replacement's nose. This is a Delco Reman. Back in the day I would replace the aluminum nose with a cast iron unit but those have become hard to find.
GM installed braces on many of it's models. I figure they were installed for a reason. If GM could have saved 25 cents per vehicle by omitting it they would have.
