Kick down switch for '67 442

Looking for a kick down switch for my '67 442. It's a Switch Pitch TH400. Appreciate any help. Would the switch for the '67 442 fit other GM cars? Thanks.

No, but it can come from another automatic trans Oldsmobile except a Toronado. I'll get you part #s when I'm back at my parts books.

Cfair here on forums has successfully repaired these switches and had a great thread on doing it. If yours isn't completely buggered you might be able to do that if you can't find one.

In a pinch, the adjustable 65-66 big car (88/98/Starfire)switch should work in the Cutlass in case you can’t find the correct circular fixed one.

Thanks cfair, I'll broaden the search. Might end up using either the B&M or the Lokar after market unit.

Where does the parts book say the FSC and F85 switches are different?

I believe the full-size switch is 1993676. Same shape and mounting points as cutlass, but adjustable.

Here’s a quick primer on these:

Possibly. Doesn't seem to me that a service part number and application would have been combined or superseded within 5 years of production, but my Jan 65 book doesn't have the 65 number and my 65-7 CSMs aren't handy.

rocketraider.

Did a search for that GM Part # 1993355 and found one at 2040parts.com, here's the link Find 1965-'67 Oldsmobile Transmission Slow Idle Switch NOS #1993355 GM Gr. 4.057 in Chicago, Illinois, United States, for US $119.95 (2040-parts.com)

He refers to it a slow idle switch?? sure looks like what I need.

Thanks,
nracobraguy

Agreed. Sellers don't always know proper terminology for stuff. If it has terminals for kickdown and stator angle it should work.

Is it new or used? Looked a little old on this phone.

That looks like the right switch for a mid-60’s cutlass/442 to me.

rocketraider,

Forgot to thank you for the part#, that seemed to do the trick. Here is what he says further down on the link;

This is a Slow Idle Switch ( or a Throttle Trans. Control Switch ) with
part # 1993355. My research shows that this fits 1965 to 1967
Oldsmobile's. The GM group number is 4.057.
It is new old stock in the original Delco Remy box.

If you search on EBay for 65-67 Oldsmobile kickdown switch, you’ll see a few available as of yesterday.

I’m in need of a new switch too for my 67 442 TH400. Does anyone recognize this version?

Probably Littelfuse. It and Delco-Remy were the OE suppliers. See if it has an L or Littelfuse spelled out on it anywhere.

This may also be a trailer towing package version.

From what I have seen in my search it is the trailer switch. Which can be had for $750 on an obsolete olds site.

I’ve done a few posts on these switches. Look for them under my user name and a few tips on making them work, cleaning them up, and adjusting them.

This is the littlefuse switch as referred to in the Olds Chassis Service Manuals for at least ‘66 (probably 65 -67 as well). It’s switch points are not adjustable. It is one of 3 combination switch pitch/ kickdown throttle control switches used in those years. I’ve just worked on big cars, but the two mounting screw holes on the bottom are identical from big to little cars and seem to apply from 65-67. Meaning you can effectively swap it into a Cutlass/442.

The A-bodies (Cutlass/442) I’ve seen mostly used the circular fixed position switches you can find on eBay, but I’m pretty sure this will bolt in and work - sort of. The only requirement is that you’ll need to adjust the throttle rods so that it switches the converter pitch and kicks down when you want it to. That adjustability depends on whether or not your car (or parts hoard) has some adjustable rod in it to make up any change in switch on a Cutlass/442.

If your rods are the fixed type, you might not like how this switch works because the geometry of opening throttles and switch points is probably a bit different from big to little cars. If it were my only option, I’d stick it on and see how it fits and works. Then go from there.

These switches are probably rare now so you kind of have to work with what you’ve got. Old’s Obsolete had one (or maybe has one) for some huge sum. They have all NOS stuff at eye watering prices that I occasionally go for. Mostly I prefer my boneyard hoard under my kitchen.

If I can help more from here, give a holler.

Oh — this one is also hooked up wrong. The Orange wire goes the the lowest terminal. It the switched power in source.

Then there should be a white wire/black wire combo going down to the transmission from the 2 upper terminals. Someone’s been in here before and it looks like they may have sacrificed one switch function or other based on the fact that there’s just one wire going down to the transmission from the switch.

cfair,

I've copied your post on how to work on them. You've been a big help to me and I appreciate it. Between you and rocketraider, I believe you've covered all the bases. Much obliged to you both.

Neuter99- maybe your switch is functional, just wired wrong as Chris has pointed out. Might need adjustment too- that's covered in the carb and tuneup sections of the Chassis Service Manual.

I think that's what happens a lot with these switches. People don't understand that they control both downshift and torque converter stator angle, don't bother to find a wiring chart, and then blame the switch and start buggering wires.

Good morning cfair.

Found someone in Indy who sent me pictures of 4 kickdown switch assemblies, rods and all. The solenoids are all squarish looking. One is even marked 67 Cutlass. Am i correct in thinking that these would be for the 2 speed auto rather than the TH400. Not sure how to attach pictures here, or i'd send you one.

Thanks,
nracobraguy

Hi. Would someone have the resistance ohms for the two solenoids in the jet away transmissions. my switch (1&black) is 20 ohms and downshift (2 & white) 5.1 ohms.
Thanks
Dennis
