Cutlass radiator overflow bottle
I'm new here so I am by no means trying to give advice, I just saw something kind of relative to your needs, thought it was funny and thought I'd share. We have a friend with a '57 Fairlane he has been restoring for around 9 years. The motor has been his biggest part of the project (other than the body, but who wants to do body work?). Last week we were over there having a gander and happened to notice an unusual accessory in the engine compartment. He has used (for a radiator overflow) a magnum sized Miller Lite beer can! He even clear-coated it to keep it from rusting. I kid you not! Now is that creative, recycling, or just crazy! eh, I guess its a temporary option?
I get the impression you're looking for a proper rad overflow for your 71. They're not as hard to come by as you might think. The "heavy duty" overflow that was usually delivered with the big blocks is the one that you can get pretty much anywhere now. If you want an absolute NOS part be prepared to shell out big $$$. A complete one still in the box recently sold for $355 on ebay. There's just the tank NOS on ebay right now for 499 but it's not complete. Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal to go with the aftermarket ones.
Parts Place sells the overflow bottle for about 119 by itself. You can get the mounting bracket for about another 35 or if you're good with angle iron, make one yourself. You can get the cap from http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...MEWA:IT&ih=016 for about $5.00 instead of paying 35.00
Fusicks, Year One, OPG, BAP etc all sell the overflow bottle, lid and mounting hardware for 199.00 + shipping and any taxes that apply.
If on the other hand, all you want is a simple overflow bottle that does the trick, there's lots of them that can easily be mounted on the side of the fender. (personally I don't like to use stuff from other models and years just because it just doesn't look like it belongs). Year One has a generic overflow bottle pretty cheap, and if you search the web, you can get them for about 25.00 or less.
Hope this was helpful.

I have the generic type and it works fine, those original ones are like gold. Just about anything that fits will work, some just look better or more original looking than others. A beer can is a little small but will do the job, remember... no alcohol abuse, empty it properly by opening and consuming promptly. On this Fourth of July holiday I will selflessly commit myself to indulging in mass quantities of the brew as a show of solidarity for all beer can overflow users, good a reason as any.
I just saw a fresh "pro" restored '65 goat and the guy stuck the hot fluid spewing overflow hose in his NOS windshield washer container, accessory heated washer fluid for winter?

I went to "The" Wal-Mart today, (my wife wanted a tomato plant due to the dreaded killer tomato outbreak), of course I had to go look at car stuff, they had the overflow tanks in the auto section clearance aisle, 4 bucks. They are actually pretty nice, give you a steel bracket that the tanks sits in, the tank, hose, hardware, I grabbed a couple. They had visor mounted video monitors on clearance too, would be cool for the rear seat Vista Cruiser sun visors.
