OK, I got a nice one from Bob ROCKETMAN269V but I'm having a hard time finding the right bolt for the hole?? I tried a 5/16 hex head self tapping and it didn't work, did the original use a nut?

The bolt did not use a nut. But some holes used coarse thread vs the fine thread. You might check that before cutting it out to a 3/8" sized bolt. John

 

Some of those frame bolts were a coarse sheetmetal style bolt,about 1/2 long with a pointed tip.Not a machined thread.

 

See pic below....it definitely uses a 5/16" bolt. All of them that I have use a regular threaded (ie machine thread) bolt to hold the battery cable tube "plate" to the frame. Sure, it doesn't make any sense since this was just a hole without any threads or a nut, etc to hold the bolt but that's what I have found on the many battery cable tube setups I have pulled over the years. Typically it's a flat tipped bolt as well. A coarse threaded and pointed 5/16" bolt would probably work as well.

If you want to get really ridiculous...the typical head marking on this bolt always seems to be a crudely hand drawn "T M" (with the "T" being on top of the "M"). Probably more than you wanted to know but "when in Rome...."

Should not be any need to go to a larger size bolt unless the hole has been wallowed out.

 

There may have been different fasteners used, so you might have to experiment a little to find the right one. I just pulled this one from a 1971 Cutlass parts car, it required a 1/2" wrench and this is the coarse threads I was trying to describe. I think this may also be what Brian was describing too. John

Thanks guy's yes it's a 5/16. I had to go to a Bolt and Fastener place and had to buy a 100 @ 10 bucks 5/16 hex head self tapping bolts, and they still didn't work!@!#. I checked the brake distribution block and it is the same bolt worked perfect, so I looked for them and couldn't find any!!!
I called InlineTube and they had it, has an anchor on top.
So the damage was 6 for 9 bucks oh well.
