76 cutlass A/C? Carb Solenoid harness

Hi all,

I'm looking for a harness that runs from the thermal cut off? to the idle solenoid for '76 cutlass. Not sure what it looks like exactly, have not found a diagram/pic of one anywhere. Mine is hacked up. Might need from firewall connection forward? Pics of my current state attached.

Thanks much!

That is the plug for your "thermal limiter" fuse.

Thanks, so the fuse has been bypassed?

It's for airconditioning compressor anyway, and has nothing to do with the carb solenoid. There are several posts on here describing how the thermal limiter circuit works. Don't worry about the jumper, the TL fuses are notorious for failing for no reason and shutting down the A/C, and someone was trying to keep the A/C functioning.

Here's a way to test the carb solenoid. 76 should be an anti-dieseling solenoid. Its purpose is to allow throttle plates to completely close when engine shuts off to prevent dieseling. The plunger should extend with ignition in RUN to set curb idle speed. Test for voltage at its plug with ignition OFF. Should be ZERO. Then test again with ignition in RUN. You should have 12 volts.

If you have 12v and the solenoid plunger doesn't extend, it's either failed or could just be gummed up a bit. WD40 will sometimes free one up.

If you don't get 12v in RUN, turn the airconditioning on and see if it will extend. If it does, the solenoid is to increase idle speed for airconditioning.

If you determine that the idle solenoid is bad, I have those. Thanks, Bob.
