72 convertible console

morning,
The door on my console was missing when I bought the car so I ordered one from Fusick. Then I found that the plastic mount on my console is broken off. So, I will have to get some flathead decorative screws and drill hoes to mount the lid. Not what I want to do, but I'm kind of stuck for ideas. In the catalog I have the only console I see is for a 64-69 with a four speed, at $429. Mine is in decent shape so modification seems the only solution. I doubt this will ever be a show car anyway so that's ok. Seems like every time I go to "fix" something on this car, I find a couple more issues. Challenging for a rookie to say the least.
Does anyone have a picture of this part showing the lid and hinge area?

don't drill all the way through the console. search on here for repairs.
Brian trick has one with a piece of aluminum with tapped holes you can slide in there.

I have a nice original complete console and shifter set up for sale for $550 plus shipping. You can sell off what you dont need to recoup some of the funds.

ok. Some great suggestions. I haven't drilled any holes yet. I did see where something might be able to go behind what's left of the plastic mounting bracket and I'm trying to come up with a way to utilize that. Still, the lid will have to be screwed, or riveted on it looks like. I just don't remember what my 70 console looked like (way back in the mid eighties).

ok its hard to see what was done but you need a u shaped (or s shaped) peice of sheet metal (or aluminum) this parst gives th eplastic support so you dont have to try to rapir it twice. you take off the 4 black rivets that hold the metal outer casing to the console and slide that casing up and off.

I then drill the holes thru the inner plastic part and u shaped metal and in my case I saved the broken plastic from the latch and incorparated it back in so the only evidence is the crack along the top of the plastic (the original break) and the bolts and nuts showing thru the console interior. i cut the bolts once I had the nut mounted and tightened

its not show car fix but it works 100% and you see no evidence form the outside

My buddy got me the replacement plastic rivets but these were white and the originals were black.

Thanks for helping me. I think I see what you did there. So, the screws or bolts are using the original slots? I was almost thinking I could get something similar behind the plastic, it's a double walled kind of deal, or seems to be. Mine (slots) are mostly intact so that might work. Then brace the outside with the metal strip, u-shape gives it lots of strength. But the screws on the lid, are they just screwed into the plastic? With pilot holes I assume. Nice fix, I like it.

ooops. I was looking at my hinge the wrong way. It has no problem attaching to the lid, just have to get it attached to the console first. Wow, it really seemed like it went the other way at first but now I see the bosses for the screws (lid to hinge). Sheeesh.
