71-72 Corporate 10 bolt 8.5 rear
Hello
Did you know there are variations of that.
Some have letter A cast into center section cover with cut out scallops
AND
Some have letter O cast into center section cover withOUT No Scallops and a "RIB" stamped on angle
I do Have One of Each
$800 drum to drum for letter A 2.73 OPEN
Letter O NOT for sale at this time..
Lately fastenal has been the least spendy.. I strap to pallet and drop off there. BUYER pays fastenal directly and gets all details worked out with them
Fastenal location in Brooklyn Park, MN USA 55445 - MNTCY

Thanks for the reply!
Does the letter A indicate Buick rear end originally? My vehicle is a Cutlass Supreme 71 convertible 350cid, built in Lansing plant
I do not have the build sheet or anything to be 100% sure what was in the car originally (it now has some Pontiac rear)
Thus I think it is the letter O version I am looking for

I have seen LANSING built cars with LETTER O rear axle , the last one of those I sold was $1700 323 ratio with a posi unit
IF you are willing to pay that much I may sell the one I have now. OUR convert is a LANSING car and I have been saving the axle for that. Mine is now 308 ratio open and I have a NEW in the box DURA GRIP Anti Spin "posi" unit that will go with it...

$1700 is a bit too much for me to spend on this part as it is not what I was originally looking for and with my project the money is very much needed elsewhere
308 ratio open however would be perfect and a bit more affordable I think

This came out of a 1971 or 1972 CUTLASS WAGON Vista Cruiser so it has the giant oversize drums and shoes to match.. I could NOT find any stamp on the axle tubes anywhere
It is sitting on the shelf I was not planning to sell it.no pics yet.. Will try and get helpers to move it on out 4 pictures and ready to travel if you buy the axle #8.5... brian55369@gmail.com is my email best for pictures Thank You

Are there any known complications when trying to fit a vista cruiser axle to cutlass convertible with the original SSIII wheels?
Does the vista cruiser axle have the code 407296 stamped on it?
I am wondering wether the vista cruiser axle would actually be an improvement when compared to the current pontiac axle which is definitely not numbers matching
(Numbers matching car is my goal)
EDIT: did some research and found this on the forums
"The Vista rear ends bolt into other A-body cars. The differences are the brake drums, backing plates (both designed for 9.5 x 2.5 shoes) and different wheel bearings."
And these seem to be in stock on rockauto. So all in all, I would get some extra braking power while still having 'numbers matching' axle if the code is stamped there

Last night the neighbors gathered in the garage and hoisted the axle up and out off the shelf it was on. It is NOW in the "work area" of the shop and I was hoping to get pictures today....
I have been involved in several swaps A-Body 2 door car axles into EL Camino / Wagons with no problems IF the model years are the same OR close that is.
IF you were going from a 1971 to a 1967 there would be a width difference... 64to67 had narrower width axle....
The only differences ( WAGON to 2 Door Cutlass Axles) that I know of are the BIG brakes and if you look closely the shock lower mount is slightly longer / lower.
I was saving this to use in our 1972 442 Convertible. I took the 8.5 rear out of that in early 1990's and installed 12 bolt TYPE-O axle 342 posi
send me an email if you would like to see pictures of the 8.5 "wagon" axle

and casting O code
I can find no code stamp at all.... (example SR was open 323 ratio SS 323 anti-spin)
Cover with rib....
I will keep this in mind when it comes to future needs, however on this rear axle I already made a deal with @11971four4two
