68 Power Trunk Release

Looking for a power trunk release for my 68 cutlass.

I think I found one but they want 175.00 for it. Does that sound like it's to much?

Any info here will be greatly appreciated!

If it's an original 68-69 vacuum operated trunk lock, and everything is there, It might not be too much. EVERYTHING means the right stuff, hoses, vac cannister under the hood, switch + bezel, the vacuum control unit and the VERY important trunk lock shaft with a ball joint swivel. W/O that piece it will never work. If you are willing to go electric, then you can do it for a lot less.

^ What he said. On any vacuum trunk set up you MUST have the trunk lock shaft with the ball joint swivel. That part is OFTEN missing.

Right, original was vacuum, If everything is working right, they work great. The cannister holds vacuum, so even if the car sits a bit, the release still works. $175.00 is way too much for an electric set up. They vary in price, but $175. is at the upper end.

Guess I will let that one go then and keep looking for another.

Thanks for all the input this is a great place with a lot of knowledgeable resources.

The correct set up should include the following:

Glove box switch
vacuum reservoir that mounts on the firewall
the metal cover that goes under the back seat and protects the vacuum line
the actuator in the trunk
the rod that is unique to the power trunk option

there is also a few clips that go on the vacuum line that should also be included

$175 is a fair price and as much as $200 is not out of line for a complete set up. Almost all the set ups you see advertised are incomplete and as mentioned prior in this thread will not work without the correct rod.

I will post a picture of the rod so you all know what it looks like.

Are they pretty universal through out the GM family...and if so what years? I do see them all over but it looks like they all are missing something per your list.

They are a GM product to fit and there is a few actuators that are a little different I have seen. Some are shaped different and some mount different. The one you pictured is the right style. It should be that gold like a carburetor was originally. I have seen them on many different cars.

The price on that one is ridiculous it is missing the rod, the switch is not correct, and it does not have the hose cover for under the back seat.

If you are shopping I am pretty sure I have a set up. I will check for you in a little while. Won't be out in the shop for an hour or so. it is early here yet.

contact me direct at lemoldsnut@aol.com

Thanks

They were used on many GM cars in the 60's. Buick, Olds, Pontiac + Cadillac. The latch servo or control unit varied some from model to model. 68 + back would have used a metal cannister, those are getting harder to find due to rust. There were different switches...still out there. The floor cover is not a big deal, it's nice, but most peeps wouldn't bother to remove it. It's that swivel piece Larry posted the pic of. That's the key piece. And...different cars used different lengths of that piece. And...often times they look good but are broken, because there are only 2 tiny rivets holding them together. I'm going to try to put an electric up here today. I've got a nice one doing nothing.

Right, missing the rod, wrong servo for your car, and missing the switch. Looks like the right can.

If someone could find that ball joint actuator it would make a lot of people happy. I have a complete set-up and I'm missing that piece too.

Actually the plastic vacuum reservoir was used on the pre 68 cars. In fact out of the over 20 66-67 cars I have owned all had the plastic ones on them. Depending on the amount of options sometimes even two vacuum reservoirs. The line cover is not a big deal but is included in a complete set up. The rod missing and you have nothing. Minimum requirements are the vacuum reservoir, correct switch, actuator and rod. The vacuum line is just rubber hose.

electric is not correct for pre70 cars.
