I see the part shown in the assembly manual, but I don't see a part number associated with it. Anyone have one of these around, or has anyone duplicated it for their own use? If you installed an 8-track in your '66-'67 without it, how did you do it?
Stilllll looking. I can maybe make one of these based on drawings seen in the ASM, but I want to make sure the self tapping screws that attach to the firewall are in the right location more than anything. Also I'm not sure where this mounts exactly - more to the left and under the ash tray than under the glove box? Anyone seen an 8-track player in an early Toro?
Looks like a real shin-knocker for the passenger, and a real pain for the driver to use. It can't go any further to the left because it would block the heater outlet. Nifty option - I had one in my '67 98; but I think it spoils the look of the Toro dash. Is your case really for a Toro, or is it a full-size?

Good golly that's the worst location and the best picture I've ever seen for one of these. After digging some more, I have a full size case with the studs and not the screw attachments like the Toro. I really wish it were better thought out, like maybe a floor mount or something. I plan on driving the car a lot, but I really enjoy the old radio/tape set up... The player is out of the case for now - maybe I could figure out a way to hang it by staring at it for a while.
I you have the unit and are willing to live with the knee-knocker location, I’d second the motion for a homemade bracket painted satin black.
You can pick up the unit screw holes from the unit itself and leave enough material to figure out the factory dash mount locations.
In my year (‘66), Olds left usually dimples in the sheet metal for options to allow precise and consistent location of optional equipment
But, where will you find 8-track tapes these days? That will be quite a hunt in itself.
Good luck!
Chris
That's probably the route I'll go here. And I've not only got dozens of 8-tracks, but I have the Kraco cassette adapter for the 8-track player so I can play all those cassettes I saved lol
Once I pull back the carpet a bit I'll see if the firewall has any dimples. The dash is supposed to have a couple mount locations behind the chrome edge trim for the front mounts. I'll toy around with it a bit today. I tossed around trying to find a '68 player and installing it where the ash tray is - no great loss to remove that - but finding that one year only case is challenging as well. The '67 is so clunky and odd that it just seems to fit better - "new technology" for the year and all that.

And then,
You can use one of those adapters so you can use a portable CD player through your cassette adapter. Been there. Done that. Works great.
The case difference is more that just the studs vs. screw attachments. The top of the case is longer on a Toro vs. full-size. The lower dash brace is too close to the firewall to use the full-size case. The studs won't have anywhere to go.

Ohhh boy. I haven't had a chance to get to the garage yet this morning, but yeah, that's a significant difference in the case. I knew the dash panel was close to the firewall, but it's been a minute since I have done any interior work with all the engine crud happening. Dang. I may have to put out a search for the Toro case, or change it up entirely and go for the '68 case and replace the ash tray. I have several of the newer style 8-track players, so that's not a problem. I often ask myself how GM made any money at all during these days, when you figure all the car-specific pieces made, especially radios and tape players, etc. Nothing seems to be shared between models. Anyway, I appreciate the photo comparison of the Toro case versus the big car. Thanks!
****EDIT**** June 4 - I was able to locate the Toronado-specific 8-track case, but I'll still take any factory mounting plate that might be out there until the time I fabricate one myself.
