1972 442 Steering wheel
1972 442 Steering wheel
Hi, In need of a 1972 442 blue Steering wheel. Thanks Phil pglass5@wi.rr.com
The Steering wheel that came with your car is the N30 Deluxe wheel ( Yours is blue with pearl inlay?). These wheels are extremely hard to find as NOS parts, and the ones for sale will have the same issues yours does. If you want to keep the original wheel, check locally for steering wheel restoration specialists. It's not cheap though - about the cost of replacing it with a 4 spoke sport wheel.
If you're looking for the custom sport wheel, it's called the N34 option. There are lots of companies (Fusick Automotive, Parts Place, Tamraz to name a few) that manufacture the complete wheel assembly and hub. Cost is around 349.00 for the complete package. You can paint the hub the same color as your steering column, but the wheel only came in one color from GM - Black.
The 4 spoke wheels that were manufactured in colors were the smaller 14 inch "Starfire" steering wheels that will mount in your car, but are not proper for the year.
Here's what I mean: this is the 4 spoke sport wheel you can get new for your car:

The part number for this wheel is Group 6.513 part number 9751871
You might find the occasional Starfire wheels on ebay once in a while, but you are holding yourself hostage to a single color.
