1970 cutlass relay
I need the relay that goes on passengers fender, I think it has something to do with the air condition, has 3 prongs , the one I have is rusted so bad it fell apart .I hope someone has a good one, or knows where I can get one. If not, do any of you know what it is called or a part number so I can try and find one. thanks

Hi. The part you are describing is an A/C Compressor Hold-In relay. GM part number 404422. It's the same for 1969 and 1970.
Create a new post in the Parts Wanted section of this website. It gets pretty good exposure.

I have 1 remaining N.O.S. RY2 Standard = 404422 GM Relay .....
it is known as the "Hold In / A.C. Cutout Relay"
I am ALWAYS on the hunt for them... they are OBSOLETE by every company
and NOT made in the chineseum world or reproduced.....

Are you doing a restoration or want it to make your A/C work? If you are using it to make the A/C work then I would not use it. Most people bypass them. I don't have the slightest idea as to why they put them on these cars. They took them off in 71. If it is a restoration then yes, you need it on there but I would still hook it up so that it is not working

A/C Clutch relay question. Hopefully the wisdom of the forum will also help someone else with your help.
Mine is a 72' Cutlass with a 70' 455 engine and front end clip. It has the 404422 relay on the passengers side fender. It clicks when the key is on. Opening it up, I found the contact was rusted off. In researching the forum, this relay was discontinued sometime during 1971.
The (3) wires, (2) Green & (1) Brown coming out of the relay are connected Except for the Brown wire coming out of the relay's double connector. It is 2' long. The po cut this brown wire and I haven't been able to find where it is supposed to go. I have traced all wires from the fuse block, read on the forum it goes to the heater control. The SM and wiring chart I purchased suggests the same.
Could this be coming from another direction?
By the po cutting the brown wire, did he Bypass the relay?
I have read where it can be Bypassed, but not an explanation on how to go about it.
Really not looking for using the 404422 relay if I don't need it. They are hard enough to find at a reasonable price, but I would like know before hand & try to find one before I try charging the system.
Getting to the point when I will find out if it will take freon. The compressor belt was missing of course when I bought the car. Putting a new belt on, the clutch on the compressor engages fine off the interior control. It also disengages with the control. So far, it seems to operate as it should.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

If it works as you have described, don't mess with it.
