1969 SS1 wheels for disc brakes car

I am also looking for a set of SS1 wheels for my 1969 442 with disc brakes in good condition. Wheel #'s would have to be front for disc's P05 810, rear P05 795 if I'm correct. Thanks for any help.

All the wheels would be the same so you could rotate the tires.

Good luck on finding them. For what I have seen and researched on those wheels, they were only made for about 4 months (APR-JUL 69). I had a set of 4 on the car but the spare was gone. It took me 2 years of searching the junkyards (back in the late 80s) to find another disc brake SSI wheel for the spare. If you get discouraged, you might want to consider SSII wheels.

Randy, what was the designation for the 14X7 wheels with a stainless steel trim ring rather than chrome plated outer rim? I thought those were available in 1969 too. John

The code stamped on the 69 ss1 chrome wheels is LY.
I am also looking for a couple of these wheels if you should come up with some extra ones to have rechromed.
My wheels were stamped 6 11. Here is a pic of the stamping on the back side of the wheel. Sorry it is upside down.

I echo Murph's comments and the stamping for the '69 SSI wheel. His picture is a good example of what you will see stamped into the backside of the wheel rim. I've only seen them with a 4, 5, 6 or 7 (April, May, June or July) for the month. Murph's is dated June 11th. There's probably an "M1" with a "9" underneath it nearby as well - the "9" means calendar year 1969.

John, the 14X7 SSI with the trim ring did not come out until the 1970 model year, and I don't know what the two letter code is for them. I'm fairly sure there exists 1970 model SSI wheels with July and August 1969 dates on them, but they would be for the early production 1970 model cars.

I went back and looked at Murph's picture again - you can see what appears to be an "M2" with a "9" underneath it, to the right of the date numbers. Remember, the picture is upside down so that "9" looks like a 6!

Good Lord, I looked at the picture again - it's an "M4". The difference in the number reflects the factory where the wheel was made.

With disc brakes, for SSI wheels, you need the "LY" code wheel and you won't find one that has a date code before your car was built. All the "LY" wheels were manufactured (as far as I know) from early April to mid-July 1969. And these wheels are hard, hard, hard to find. The "LE" code SSI won't work on your car.

With disc brakes, for SSII wheels, you need the "LS" code wheel. Ideally, if you want your car to be "perfect", you would want 5 wheels with matching dates that are anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months before the build date of your car.

Both of these style wheels are 14X6. For either of these wheels, the two letter wheel code is stamped into the inside rim (visible from the back side of the wheel even with a tire mounted on the wheel) close to where the tire meets the rim. Any '68 or '69 SSII wheel will work on your car as both years use "LS" as the wheel code. If you get a '69 wheel with the stainless inserts and you are not worried about date codes, just remove them and paint the perimeter of the openings where the trim pieces were with an argent color paint.

Some people will use newer SSI and SSII wheels that are 14X7 starting in the 1970 model year. I do think they look better, but that's not what came on the '68 or '69 models. My brother has two sets of SSII wheels for his '68 - one set of 14X7s (he likes that look better, too) and one set of 14X6s when it's showtime.

Another note - SSI wheels manufactured before mid-1968 do not have any outside markings on them so you have to see them with the tire off to find out what they are. If there is a "795" somewhere on the center area of the rim, it's an SSI that won't work on your car because those SSIs work only for drum brakes.

I went back and read my comments and figured out I messed up a bit, so let me set the record straight. If your car was built from about the middle of April to mid-July 1969, the LY coded SSI wheel could have very well come on your car. But, from what I've observed, LY wheels were only made for about 3 months (April, May, June, and perhaps into July 1969) so they are real hard to find. Also, if someone has a set of LY wheels, they probably know what they are by now and would want a pantload of money for them.

Hope that sheds some new light!

I have 3 LY 810 wheels, the one I just looked at is dated May 12. I'd like to swap them for 795 wheels or consider cash offer.

I am interested, but in fairness to 1969 442 w30, who started this thread, he should have first dibs.

Would be interested in 1 or all 3 of the LY wheels. May have 795's to trade, I will check condition of the wheels I have.

thanks

Here are pics of the 3 wheels that Henry has. Pay attention to the chrome on the front of the wheels....these have none of the bubbling and rust spots that you see on a lot of old chrome wheels these days (ie these wheels have been stored inside for years..not out in the weather like a lot of these old wheels). Note the lack of roadrash/bent edges also. The overall effect after some chrome polish, cleaning the satin chrome spokes and refinishing the black inserts should be some very nice looking wheels IMO. More pics to follow.

Anyone interested in these two rims?

They are currently listed on my local CL:

"I have 2 original all chrome olds ssi rally wheels.JK 810 code.
They are both 14x6 with 4 3/4 bolt pattern. All of the lug holes are good.
These were on an old 1967 442 I had years ago.
I only have the 2. No caps. $100.00 for the pair."

No luck here finding any wheels yet. Great deal! Who are you having rechrome them and what are they charging in you area? Are you having them reringed or recroming them all together. Thanks

sending them to a guy in Iowa who has been doing wheels for a long time. Reasonable cost, excellent results. He is cutting out the centers of the wheel, and having the original rim shell rechromed then welds the center back in. Since the center spokes have a satin or brushed look, these are not rechromed, only lightly glass beaded around the spoke to clean up the lug area.
I had the original LY wheels done last year, but two had issues - one bent rim ( could have used, but chose not to, and the other had pits in the spokes I was not happy with ).
They turned out beautiful, and in the end, I had less money in these that I would have if I bought the repo wheels. The turn around time is about 8 weeks, and the cost to ship to and from was about 27.00 per wheel UPS from Ky to Iowa and back.
I will be sending him my original 69 Hurst Olds wheels this winter to redo, as they have the date codes and are original to the car I have. But that is another project!
Here is a before and after pic of the same wheel.
Let me know your thoughts!

Here's a link to Kurt (McWheels) in Iowa. He upset a few people over on V8Buick in the past with lack of communication, delays, etc but that was sometime ago and he seems to be getting great reviews again. I think he just got behind and took on too much work awhile back. I've been watching closely for any negative commentary about him since that happened a few years ago and have yet to see any negative postings. I have a set of Buick Rallye wheels I want to get redone so I was keeping a close watch for any further negatives on him.

He should be on your contact list of people to consider.

Never saw any complaints about his work quality or the finished product so again, he would be worth contacting. I plan to contact him in the future about a set of Buick Rallye wheels that I need redone.

It is Kurt that I am refering to, and my experience with him was fantastic. No complaints whatsoever. The quality of what he did was outstanding, and priced very reasonable for the services provided.

These wheels are hard to find, but do not warrant 300-400 a set that needs work. 40--50 per wheel is a reasonable. NOS or mint wheels should be priced higher, but how oftern will these show up?

When I had mine done, it cost me
27.00 shipping to and from
145.00 per wheel to chrome

172 total

reproductions are over 200 per wheel plus shipping.

I just bought 2 more at 40 each, so I anticipate the final cost at 220 per wheel and have originals with correct codes and dates.

I agree 100% on price of used wheels, but some people don't look at that way??? Go figure. Thanks for info.
