Good luck with the search. I have never seen an original 68 Assembly Manual. There are others that have more pages than I do but none of us have even seen a complete one. I'd try contacting wmachine on here. When I was looking for a missing page he had it. He's the only person I've ever talked to that has more than just the general Assembly Manual that available electronically everywhere.

Oh I must have missed that requirement.
When you find that source, please share such info. I have what appears to be a 10th generation re-copy with missing pages. Much better than what I had before, which was nothing at all.

I downloaded it back when it was free. Generally it has everything you need to assemble the car except what was done at Fisher Body. There are very few things that I haven't found and I used it to completely assemble my car in a nut and bolt, frame off, restoration

The wild about cars '68 version is missing a lot of the Chapter 6 engine details compared to the '69 manual I have. I've used the '69 version as an occasional reference when trying to figure out engine parts. Other than that it's pretty good.

I emailed him the 68 Assembly Manual from WAC. He was specfically looking for the placement of the fender numerals for the W36 option which, of, course, the assembly manual doesn't have. So I sent him the "Seven Springs" fender pictures.

At least he was making a solid attempt to put them in the right place. You should see all the Facebook yahoo's that insist that the factory installed the stripe in either location. They use this promo photo from Wild About Cars as "evidence" that the factory installed them that way:
I don't know when W30's started production but the original order forms didn't even have the W30 option code on them. These early promo photo's were probably taken long before the 68 model was in production. The release date of this photo was 9/11/67

The Black and White photo from the last post. Is it an original photograph or a just a download off the net? I have one of the same car different angle, with a lansing stamp on the back of the photo. Is it worth anything?

Interesting that the stripe is mysteriously in the correct location on this photo
Here's the almost same photo from WAC. I'm sure these were probably promotional literature that were available from GM

Thanks found it. I like the side stripe better but now I think the numbers are not in the right place on my car. I believe they positioned the numbers in a different location for cars that did not have the W30 option which I am now understanding is the option code for the side rally stripe. Hmm new at this Olds stuff. Dilema for sure now. Should I put the rally stripe on or not. Gotta measure the location of the numbers tomorrow to see what I can do. Thanks all.

I don't think I will move the numbers location. I may just not put the stripe. That is too bad I liked the look of the rally stripe on the car. Not a big fan of the pin striping. BTW is the pin striping on the dash painted or metal. My car is in the body shop right now so I can not go out and look.

yes I looked for an original 400 2 barrel motor but found a 425 2 barrel instead. running and ready to go. i will drop that motor in the car and pull the 350 Rocket they put in.

You have the Y70 GT stripe. The standard 68 442 fender in the lower left of the Assembly Manual pic above is the correct numeral location for that stripe.
These are the measurements for that location:
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...surements.html
If you put the W36 stripe on that is correct.
A little background....
The W36 stripe was a stand alone option and also mandatory if you got a W30. The Y70 option code (also called the GT pin stripe) was standard with all 68 442's. If you did not wish to have the Y70 GT pin stripe it could be deleted by option code Y74. Because the Y70 stripe could not be installed with the W36 option, all 68 W30 and W36 cars had the option code Y74 checked off.
There are very few 68 or 69 Lansing cars that have any paperwork. Yours was imported into Canada so you're lucky to have it. If this was my car I'd put the numbers in the standard 68 442 location (lower left in the Assembly Manual page above) and I wouldn't put the W36 stripe on it. It really doesn't matter if you put the Y70 stripe on it because that could always be added later.
Just my opinion. It's your car to do as you please.

Thanks Mike. I will not change the location of the numbers. They will stay in the standard spot and I will not put the stripe. I am a build sheet kind of guy. There is a guy here in Oshawa that gets these build sheets. Does he not have the access to all of the cars built? BTW really appreciate your help on this.

George Zapora from GM of Canada (sp?) does the documentation for all the Oshawa built cars and all cars that were imported into Canada. Cars that were built and stayed in the United States will only have documentation if the owner happened to save it or if a build sheet was found. Build sheets are sometimes found for all the assembly plants except Lansing. Lansing had a strict policy of not leaving them in the cars. The only documentation sometimes found in Lansing cars are the small 2"x4" Fisher broadcast cards and they only have information pertaining to what was installed at Fisher Body. (BTW this info pertains mainly to 68-69 cars)

Yes George that is right. I got my build sheets for my 2 GTO's from him as well years ago. Goats are gone, I turned to bikes for a while as they were easier to store. But the 442 has been a fave of mine for the last 30 years and I could not pass this one up. I worked my neighbor for 1.5 years to get this car that was given to him in exchange for him restoring the guys 70 Chevelle. I love this friggin car. Can not wait for the dang winter to be over so I can swap out the motor I got from John here in Canada another sweetheart of a guy. Just finished a build of an 87 Chev R/V20 pickup as well. I call him Megatron. Put a dump bed on it and it came with a plow but it was gone if I did not pull it out of that field this year.

If you still have the electronic assembly manual, could ya send it my way? also got a 68’ which i need to check things with.

I'll also add that the measurements on two original paint W36 fenders don't exactly match this drawing. Chris Witt posted one set of photos and because of that I measured my own 68 W30, which matches the photos Chris took but not this drawing.
