1964 442 Air Cleaner

My dual snorkel air cleaner was stolen off my 1964 442. Looking for a replacement. Any help will be appreciated. Can I buy an after market?

That is a tough one, there are no reproduction ones. Best thing is to add another snout to a regular 64 air breather till something comes along.

What year and type to get second snorkel

I have a 1964 4 barrel F85 cleaner with the one Snorkel. From what I have seen it looks like the second snorkel on the 442 cleaner is a little shorter and maybe wider at the base than the F85 single snorkel. Do you know what year and type of cleaner that I could use to get this second Snorkel?

From what I have seen the original 442 air breather had identical snouts. I have not really studied on the subject and would assume with 2 stock 4bbl air breathers you could weld the other on in the proper location. Perhaps someone else has more knowledge on this subject. I doubt you would be able to replicate the 442 air breather 100% but you can get close and only the sharp eyed and in the know would be able to tell.

Thanks you for your help. I will try to find two additional air cleaners.

Does anyone have a 4 barrel 1964 F85 air cleaner?

Thank you I appreciate your help it is hard to find parts. I am going to try to make a duel snorkel air cleaner from two. If you have two o will take both of them I could use the trim molding around rear passenger wheel if you have it

Does the 2 barrel air cleaner have a snorkel that is the same length as the dual snorkel air cleaner?

Thanks,

The one I have in my stuff is a 2brl...not a 4brl. I do have a 4brl base plate though. I must have already sold the top.

JATA,
Thank you, I appreciate your help. I may need the base if I fine someone with just the top. Do you know if the snorkel on the 2brl is the same as the 4brl? I am going to try to make a duel snorkel air cleaner from two single snorkel air cleaners.

Thanks,

That's basically what I have as well..although mine looks like a two brl breather, from the diameter of the inner housing area.

The best that I can tell it is what I am looking for. I think that I could add a second snorkel to your air cleaner and it would be like my old dual shorkel air cleaner. Do you know what car this can off of?

Thanks,

JATA I thought dmw wanted 2 to make into 1, can't ours be "combined" that way? I've never seen a 64 442 AC in person. Brett

I don't have a stock 442 air cleaner, so don't know what the actual size of the snorkles are. Mine a 2brl so the snorkles are probably a little smaller in diameter. Best to get the dimensions as offered above and then build what you need from them.

Yes it can be done, here is my version for the 64 pro-touring post car under construction.. I used two 65 Starfire air cleaners. These snorkels are bigger that the 64 F-85's but just to give you idea of the look.

Thank you,

Your air cleaner looks excellent. I am encouraged. I hope that I can match the workmanship that your air cleaner shows.

Thanks,
Danny

Sounds like you have an original 64 -442. But in the meantime this was actually easy. If you get to that point of making your own I can give you some tips.

Thanks, I will be asking you for help. I am in the process of buying two single snorkel cleaners. When I get to the point of removing one of the snorkel I will be asking for help.

Thanks,
dmw

I do not profess to be an expert on 64 442 breathers or do I know if Cali cars had a different breather but this one looks odd with one snout larger than the other...

Thanks for letting me know about the 1964 442 dual snorkel air cleaner for sale. The air cleaner really looks in very good condition but I do not have a California car. I need a dual snorkel air cleaner with the vent hole on the passenger side snorkel.

I found a single snorkel air cleaner from someone on this forum. It is off of a 1964 cutlass. I plan to find another single snorkel air cleaner and make a dual snorkel from these two single snorkels.

Does anyone know if there is a single snorkel air cleaner that does not have the vent hole. For example does any of the earlier years have a similar snorkel without the vent hole? A second snorkel without the vent hole would make my fabricated air cleaner more like the original air cleaner.

Thanks,
dmw

Smile 1964 442 air cleaner

I completed my first fabrication of a 1964 442 dual snorkel air cleaner (from two single snorkel cleaners) yesterday.

I do not have a clue about what color to paint it. Does anyone know what color a 1964 442 dual snorkel air cleaner should be painted. Does anyone have a paint chip number for the original GM color?

Photos!

Did you cover up the 2nd PCV hole or just live with it?

Fusicks and others sell correct[ish] red[ish] air cleaner paint, unless your stds are more stringent than "ish"...

I modified the snorkel after I removed it from the housing. I used a small Hammer & Dolly Set to remove the boss contour around the vent hole in the snorkel. I then mig welded a small piece of sheet metal inside the snorkel to cover the hole. I used body filler to smooth out the dolly work and welding. It will not be noticeable from the outside. I used body filler and primer to smooth out small dings in the snorkels.

I would like to use Urethane Base Coat / Clear Coat so I need a paint chip number or some kind of reference. My standards are not that stringent so if you have a paint company’s name of a color and that is similar I would go with it.

I still have not figured out how to post Photos. I am sure I will get it figured out soon and will post photos after I get the air cleaner painted.

Thanks,
dmw

The middle of the snout needs to be 47degrees from a vertical line through the air cleaner. basically draw and X and Y axis through the center of the air cleaner. This will form a 90 degree angle. The center of the snout is 47 degrees off the Y-axis. So, start by measuring from the center of the original snout and then go to the right 47 degrees, this is your Y-axis line through the wing nut hole. From this line go another 47 degrees to the right (i.e. counter-clockwise), this is the center line (drawn through the wing nut hole) for the second snout.

So, 94 degrees between the snout centerlines?
You don't reckon this was measurement error and the obvious nominal 90 degrees was the drawing spec?

I am considering making one or two of these out of what few pre-66 air cleaners I have around yet.

I recall seeing one on Dr. Oldmobile's El-Cutlass a while back, and we laughed and laughed when I pointed out that the 2nd snout had no hole for the air to enter the filter plenum. Well, I -assume- that the factory air cleaners actually had air passages from both snouts. Anyone know for sure?

I was going to carefully cut the hole a bit smaller than the snout, then make a proper anvil in order to flare the metal out into the snout a bit, like the original ones did. Either that, or take the entire section from the donor unit, weld it in, and then finish the seams to nearly undetectable smoothness.
