71-72 Cutlass Core Support

Good condition, just surface rust, no rust holes or dents. Can email pics. $125. New Haven CT area. Local Pickup.

This pic should clear up what year(s) it fits.

This is the battery area, its solid.

You probably know that 1970 is different than 1971-1972.

You probably also know that 1972 is different from 1971 is different from 1970. Which year is this really?

I bought it as a backup and never needed to install it. It's marked with yellow paint 70-2. Its a solid part even in the battery tray area. I'm no longer in the hobby and thought I would sell some of the remaining parts.

The '70 front end goes together totally differently than the 71/72. The 71/72 are essentially the same except that the top plate of the '72 has a "bump" where the outboard ends of the grills wrap around and in. The bumps give clearance for the grill.

The '72 core support should work in a '71 from what I understand, but the '71 core support causes clearance issues with the '72 grillwork.

You're correct. But, IF the car is receiving 442 grills, either core support (71/72) will work.

Couldn't I just use my own original bumped top plate ? What else is different and will this bare bones only core support bolt on to my 72

Yes you could use your original rad support. Yes this 71 support would bolt up exactly the same. What's wrong with yours that requires the swap? If it's the battery tray area you could use this one as a donor, or fabricate the tray area yourself. IIRC you have those skills.

Note: the rad top plate is a different part than the rad support.

Here's a very clear picture that shows the 72 Radiator Core support with the 'bumps' for the forward set grills. Note: it also has the tabs spot welded in for the fan shroud mounting.

It's got a massive hole. The tray itself is long gone not concerned but the core has a hole large enough that a patch would need to be welded on. At $125 and a two hour drive thought this was the better way to go.
