I’m building a 400G motor which has a small bore size. Eagle rods physically won’t fit into bore. Lesson learned. At least i caught it early before mounting the pistons and balancing crank.

I ended up rebuilding stock rods. FYI...the outer dimension of the big end is 3.990. My bore is 3.905. I’m not aware of any aftermarket rod (reasonably priced) that will fit into the small bore 400G.

Just thinking out loud, here, is it known whether your rods will work on the 396021F 455 block? Someone may be able to use the rods in their 455 build.

We used these exact rods in our build on our 455, and they are decent after a little proper measurement and correction if necessary and if they are over the maximum bore size, as not all need it. Also, expect that the pin ends will need to be honed to fit your wrist pins. I think they are rated to 900hp.

Would it have been possible to clearance the block?

yes, that is also what it takes to run these even in a 455 with a 4.185 bore.... a good amount of clearancing

But some people either don’t understand they have to or don’t want to do that.

You’re better than me if you can make a notch to allow the rod to fit the bore. The Eagle rods will not fit into a 400G unless it’s bored to at least 4.000 but that’s not possible on all blocks.

I get your struggle, but I would do at least what you said with boring that hole bigger...

those late 400’s are worse than a 305 Chevy!!!

haha.... poke poke

the notching I was speaking of is the bottom of the bores under the litter galley

If I had the money and wanted to keep a 69 442 stock appearing on the block and everything... I would sleeve the block with some big bores so it could open the valve area for good power.
