Sorry, but that's not a 442 air cleaner base, 69 or other.

Well, the vacuum attachment looks closer to the round part of the housing on the engine picture. I've heard that the 442 has a shorter snorkle than the full sized cars. Is that correct? Is there some other difference between 442 air cleaner housings and the full sized cars? John

That is a correct '68 442 air cleaner. Notice the difference in the size of the snorkel. Size of the snorkel is the same '68 and '69 and are exclusive to the 442 and Highway Patrol motors.

(I mean the 2nd pic posted is a '68 442 air cleaner)

Correct. That is probably a '69, but not a 442. Look at the difference in the snorkel from the pic in the 3rd post (although that is a '68).
I have the measurements somewhere, I should post them. Doesn't help much with pics, though.

Sorry the pics don't point out the difference very well at all. The one on the right has a longer snorkel and appears to have a narrower air intake opening.

Pictures can be deceiving for sure. So nothing beats actual measurements. But the one on the car (on the left) looks right and the the one on the right doesn't.
Please don't tell me they're the same!!

No there not the same. I just had the 442 air cleaner on the Vista in the pics and the Vista one in the shed. Now I'm straight thanks to you.

I'd call that a productive day.

Let's see if these pic help show the differences. It's really easier to tell in person up close.

But you do have the Vista lid on the 442 base, right?

When the red Air Cleaners came out, they had the AC Delco numbers and information PAINTED (in white) on the upright side of the air cleaner. Maybe you could find that information and post it as a pic so the number could be compared to a parts listing and confirm its application?

Ok, this looks a lot like the picture that Jamesbo posted, and you say his is a 69. That's confusing because your comment to agtw31 states its not a 69 air cleaner. I looked at both of the pics side by side and they look pretty much identical.

Confusing for sure Allen.
Since multiple pics were posted by both agtw31 and jamesbo, I have no idea what pics you're talking about when you say "this looks a lot like the picture that Jamesbo posted".
The original pic posted looks like the first pic and the right side one in the second pic that jamesbo posted. The left side one in the second pic jamesbo posted (the one installed on the car) looks correct.

agtw31 posted the first picture showing a red air cleaner and the thermovac inlet is close to the end of the snorkel. Then Jamesbo posted one that showed the same kind of arrangement. THAT's what caused the confusion. In your reply to agtw31 you say that it's not 442 or even 69 for that matter. In reply to Jamesbo, you say it's not 442 but is probably a 69 air cleaner. Look at the pics again and you'll see what I mean. I'm not comparing the one that you say is the correct 68 442 police air cleaner, or the one on Jamesbo's car.

Correct, I mistakenly had the Vista lid on the 442 air cleaner base and the 442 lid on the Vista base.

Hey gang, I'm sorry I got this so confused but I learned something yesterday I didn't know. [There's a slight difference in 69 air cleaners]

Dumb ole Jamesbo just hadn't paid enough attention to detail and candidly never met anyone who knew enough to point it out.

IMHO that's what this forum is for to help one another.

Zo Thanks Wmachine. I really appreciate it.

We're fine Allan. No matter how careful one is in their descriptions (and I try to be), there usually a way that it can not be clear.
I think this will clear us up now: When I said "that's not a 442 air cleaner base, 69 or other" I meant that it is not a 442 base of any year, not a '69 442 base or any other year 442 base. Never meant that to read that it wasn't a '69 base.

Don't let others that try to belittle and make fun of our efforts put you off.
Remember who didn't know what they were talking about to begin with.

Wmachine????

Would the 69 W- 30 dual snorkle air cleaners have the short snout? [2 of them]

Sorry to re open up this can of worms thread, but I thought this was as good a place as any to duscuss 442 air cleaner base gradations.

Cool Base camp

The air cleaner base in the very first photo is for a '69 small block...they have a narrower snorkel and the re-inforcement on the inlet end (two piece snorkel)

I agree with YellowStatue here. I have a '69 350 breather, pics below, and it has the "narrower snorkel and the re-inforcement on the inlet end (two piece snorkel)" as YellowStatue says.
Here are some good pics of my un-restored breather dated Oct 23 1968
Part number is shown still quite clearly as well, 6484803, anyone wanna look it up???
See...
