I have an honest question regarding this cap, I’ve seen a few on sale here and curious why none of the ‘70 Oldsmobiles I’ve owned, and I’ve probably owned at least a dozen, have had this cap? Was this style specific to a particular plant?

Maybe all you cars had the California emissions package. They had the more conventional round cap.

This is the correct gas tank cap for 1970 as confirmed by the CSM.

Back in the day, gas stations were full service and gas caps were often not replaced by the attendant. They were not tethered as they are today. Missing / stolen gas caps were replaced with whatever aftermarket cap was available that would fit, not the “correct” cap.
