SSI center caps EARLY style Olds 1970 442

Very nice original set of 4 SSI center caps, plus a spare NOS rocket emblem decal. There were several variations of these caps. I believe this is the factory installed type. They have the raised ridge at the bottom. The ridge has a brushed or satin chrome finish. On the top, the rocket emblem is set deeper into the cap. Later NOS caps and repops are not as deep. Includes an extra NOS rocket decal, part # 393798. 2 of the original rockets are real nice, 1 has a small defect, the 4th one has several small defects. These would be perfect for a "survivor" type car. $150.00 plus shipping. PM me if interested.

Do you know when the changes were made to the SS-I caps - was it with the change to the 7" rim?

SSI center caps

I believe all the factory installed 1966-1972 SSI center caps are the same. They are like the ones I have. Later caps that were available as service replacements began to change. The first change was to the decorative 3/16 ridge at the bottom. Instead of being a satin or brushed finish, it was shiny chrome like the rest of the cap. Eventually this ridge was completely eliminated. The other change was to the recessed area at the top, where the emblem is. Earlier caps had a deeper recess than the later service replacement and reproduction caps. It is quite noticeable when the caps are compared side by side.

Thank you for the information. Never noticed the ridge being satin or brushed finish, always thought they were completely chromed. Also did not notice recessed area being different depths with different caps.

Was this possibly due to Oldsmobile later using the Chevy, Mopar, or AMC cap with just the Rocket emblem for OTC replacements, since they had phased out the SS-I rim and to keep costs down, rather than continued manufacturer of the Olds cap?
