This afternoon I picked up a 1966 Cutlass 2 door hardtop parts car. The only cancer type rust I see is under the front windshield, the rest is just surface. But there's lot of dents! At some point it must have been stripped down to the metal and not treated correctly before being painted, as the paint has peeled off in big chunks. The car is missing the radiator, coil, and part of the seatbelts. I'm using the long trim piece running across the trunk lid as it's better than the one on my 1967 442 project car. Since I'm upgrading I do have one with bumps in the chrome. I still need to get the trunk open (no key, so cross your fingers there's no dead bodies) But most everything you see is available. Check out the photos and you can go to the photobucket link to see more. If you want rust free lower patch panels, this car might be a good donor for that. It does have a 330 4bbl engine with california emissions. The motor does turn over when I rotate the fan so it's not froze up. The carb looks like a replacement? It has the number stamped in the side like the later years, I thought the 1966 used a round disc with the number on it. The carb it has is number 7041312. I do have a California title with it (tags expired in 1997) so if someone wants a california rust free chassis or even the whole car(?) let me know. John

How bad is the trim piece behind the left front tire? It connects to the wheel arch molding and goes to the rear of the fender.

Another member commented that it looks like this car could be save. Yes, I believe it could and apologize to those of you who can't find project cars where you live. I expect the cost of shipping a car would make it too expensive to ship this back east where the salt has already eaten up cars of this vintage. But if someone wanted to... I'd sell it as it sits for $650 and for another $100 throw in a pair of replacement fenders missing the front extensions. I could add a rebuildable 455 for another $250. But I've got several project cars with much more collectability than this one waiting for attention. And... I've made a commitment to purchase two more cars from the same place I got this one. I'll be getting a 1970 Cutlass 4 door and a 1967 Vista Cruiser wagon in the next few weeks. Both have problems, but could also be considered projet cars. I already have more cars hidden behind the house and garage than I should. But when I see cars that I know have parts the Oldsmobile community is looking for its hard for me to pass them by. I want to pull the dash and see what kind of shape its in. If all the mounts are good and not cracked I may try to sell it as a unit. Yesterday I got it unloaded from the trailer and pulled most of the interior out. The carpet did hold moisture to the floorboards and they've got a coating of rust on them. This car has a complete 1966 California Emissions setup. A member here is interested in the tall oil fill tube which was used on the L69 option and the Cali Emissions. He's got first dibs if I take the motor apart. But first I want to see if someone would like the complete setup for a restoration project. Either complete motor air cleaner to oil pan, fan to flexplate for $400, the motor turns over by hand. Or complete emissions setup which includes air pump, alternator & Power steering pump and brackets (alternator too if wanted, #1100921) injection tubes and all plumbing plus tall oil fill tube for $175, I can add the #3 heads with drilled holes for the injection tubes for an additional $100 if needed. Let me know if you need to see addional photos. John

OK thanks. Also would you know if the gear selector linkage from the column to the trans would work. I have a 65 f85 with a 455 transplant along with a 400 transmission. If so would you be willing to sell those parts also. These are the last things I need to finally get this project on the road. Thanks

I'm going to try and pull the dash this weekend. I have one other person who has asked for the dash assembly, if he doesn't need the speedometer head your next in line.

Andy, I've got the rear bumper off but not pulled the tail lights yet. I believe there's damage on each bezel but when I get them pulled I'll take photos for you. It may be a little while before I get down to the frame, do you need that A-arm right away? I may have one from a 1970-72 if they interchange. Sorry, the convertible parts all went with the 1967 convertible I traded last summer. I'll check the arm rest bases and headlight bezels.

Another member asked about the air cleaner assembly. Since I've not got a request on the whole motor I will be offering that to him.

Any pics of the rear seat cover? Or are they shredded?

 

A previous owner stretched black vinyl over the top of the existing covers. There's no pattern to the black vinyl. The seat back has cracked due to sun through the back windshield. One cool detail is I spotted this under the seat bottom. I'm surprised it didn't get removed when they recovered it. John

I would still be interested in a column shifter end, or the whole arm if it looks nice, for my 65. Have not seen one on e-bay for over 1 year now.

Can you post some more pic's of the interior?
This car does look very complete.

Well, the one on the column of this 1966 is broken... and there's a broken on in the glove box too! Here's the pic's of what I got. If you wanted to try and fix the piece from the glovebox its yours for shipping costs. Maybe you could rebuild the missing part by cutting the good section from yours, or from similar plastic and have it plated. Or try the Krylon chrome paint. There have been a few people comment they like how it looks. There must have been something wrong in the batch of plastic used back then as broken ones seem to be the norm. John

This car is getting pretty much stripped, I've sold the drivers side lower fender portions for patch panels in Reno (thank you Curtis!) but have not done anything with the other fender, doors or rear quarter panels. I have someone local who's expressed interest in the roof and the frame to use on a Chebby. I do have a commitment on the panel between the rear seat and the rear windshield. Anyone else interested in some relatively rust free sheetmetal? I'd like to use a sawzall and finish cutting it up in the next few weeks. John

 

re: frame Chevelle front rails are spaced closer together. Roof panel is the same however the sail panel area is different.

I think Olds was the only one who had the crossflow radiator and the wider frame rails on front of the A bodies, '66-'67 only.

 

Thanks Guys. This one has a wrinkle in the left front frame ear where it smacked whatever the POV hit. But the Chebby guy needs the rear portion, so I'm hoping that will interchange. Also, I didn't know the sail panels were different so I'll have to see if the roof will still work for him. I think he had rust from a vinyl roof, so he may need the sail panel portions too.

Anybody need quarter panel lower patch panels... or wheel well patches?
