Open Face Alternator
#3
For someone looking to at least get a more correct "look" on their '70 442, etc this would be a good deal.
>It's a 6 spoke front half design....same as the original Delco Remy open face alternators used in '69/70.
>It's a internally regulated alternator...again, that's what was used on a '69 or '70 442, W30, '69 442, W30, H/O, etc.
>Back half, while not having the raised cooling fins, otherwise looks like the original with the ridges around the side/perimeter of the back case half.
>Overall, the case appears to be clean....not corroded, pitted, etc...it will clean up and look VERY NICE once rebuilt/restored. Adjuster bolt hole threads look clean and not stripped, etc.
Put a more correct looking replated pulley and fan on it, have it rebuilt/refinished and it will look A LOT more real than an internally regulated "closed face" alternator on a '70 442, etc...and at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

I'm hoping I can swap the guts from a 78 amp 12SI into this one.

Many years ago (20+) an alternator caught my eye while walking around a wrecking yard down in La Grange, TX. "Open face" feature sort of glared at you and said "BUY ME". Did so and got it home and realized it was a 5 spoke design and more of what I now call a "semi open face" design.
There was a SLIGHT lip, maybe 3/16" wide, cast into the front half along the outside edge of each opening. They probably added that to give a little more strength/support around the outer ends of the spokes. Ended up taking a file, etc and removing the slight lip to give it the more complete "open face" look (see pic - red lines show general location of the extra lip I mention).
It's a Delco Remy alternator.....1102566 37A with a 5J16 date code (1975 is my bet).
I've found 5 spoke open face alternators on some early '70's Buick Electras.....they use the regular style back halves as well.

I'm pretty sure this is actually a Pontiac/Cadillac alternator, which used the six spoke front but the non-"diamondback" rear. My 70 W-30 won't be a "paint dab and chalk mark" resto anyway, as I don't have paperwork on the car and I plan to drive it. I'd lose points for the headers and 2.5" exhaust anyway.

FYI, on early 70's open face alternators there are different designs. The Olds used a alternating thick and thin 6 spoke design, whereas Pontiac's spokes were all thick. The only vehicles to use the diamond back design, were Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Corvette from 1969-70.
