A/C evaporator box out of 70 442

Pulled this heater box from a 70 442. The engine side is still very nice and not damaged from an engine being pulled like so many are. I can not confirm that this is the norm but from what I have observed, the 70 box is a little different color than a 72. I do not know about the color of a 71. If that is not important to you then it will work on 70-72. Maybe 69 but not sure? $100 and shipping.

Eric - the '72 cars got a lighter grey colored box. I think the "darker" box like you have was used through '71.

'71 boxes will also have an additional hole in the larger outside half...the hole is for another one of those sensors and it's approx 1-1/4" in diameter (with two small screw holes - on either side of the hole). Hole can be easily drilled out for a AC wiring setup that utilizes this extra sensor. This hole is located down in the area where the heater hoses pass over the box @the firewall.

The extra sensor hole (if it's there) can easily be plugged off and covered up/hidden if your box has it and it's being used on a '70 car.

I've seen the repro boxes and they are pretty bad.......almost a black type glass or plastic (NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE to the factory look/coloring) and like many repro parts, they probably missed some other details.

Can't tell if yours has the "extra sensor" hole or not. Yes, the box will also fit and work for a '72 car and I also think your box is the correct color/style for a '69 car.

1968 oldsmobile 442 Evaporator Removal

Hello, I have a 1968 oldsmobile 442 and I am upgrading the AC to R134. My evaporator box splits in half, I am removing the half on the engine side, what all do I have to remove to change out the evaporator? valve cover? Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what has to be done at a minimum to replace the evaporator. I have always removed the plastic inner fender and removed the entire box. Then changed the evap on the bench and rebuilt the entire thing.
