Just curious Bryan, how much torque can that handle? When is it a good idea to go to a 12 bolt rear?

You can't exactly use the torque output as the gauge. It is the amount of blunt force thrown at it. You have to look at a variety of factors, like converters, slicks, clutch, etc.
This rear,with stock axles,behind a healthy big block,3000 stall auto,drag radials or cheaters,in a 3900lb car,will handle 11:70's all day.
If someone already owns one of these rears, and is planning on throwing more force to it,you would just need to upgrade the stock 28-spline axles to aftermarket 30-spline axles.
I have one locally,in a 3400lb 71 Camaro,running 9:40's.it lived even when it was behind the clutch-TH400 set-up,and still going now.

Weak Link in rearend?

What usually breaks first on the bolt in axle 8.5 10 bolts? I assume the carrier caps are the weak link. Strange Engineering sells aftermarket carrier caps for these rearends, but I've only used them on a 12 Bolt. Can you use any 8.5 10 bolt aluminum rear cover with cap supports like an LPW, Jegs or Summit cover with the bolt in axle 10 bolts?

The first thing to go,with serious power,is the shafts.I have never needed to mess with aftermarket caps with these rears. You can add an LPW girdle cover. I ran my 8.5" with 30-spline axles, stock caps, and a W27 cover, behind my Supreme, and it never failed, going 10:90's.It is now behind a stick-shift 11-sec BBO,and doing fine.
The billet caps can't hurt though. If you can get them machined to the housing, great.
