In my opinion, the carb stamp is suspect. The alignment of the 5 and 6 and the spacing presents problems for me.

 

Looks like the pad has been milled. Notice the mill line across the top, that's supposed to be completely flat

For discussion is a legit 7040256 carburetor stamping from my storage cabinet. Compare this stamping to the stamping in post 5, which is the eBay photograph.

If things sound too good to be true there is usually a reason. Continuing, a 7040256 rebuilt carb today from a reputable rebuilder/seller will generally sell in the $5K price range--maybe a little more, or less, plus this seller has thrown in a W30 intake and a 977 distributor? Either this seller does not know what he is selling or there is another motive in play.

The "4" is different too.

 

The 6 and the 9 are different shapes between the two carbs as well. And the 1, for that matter.

 

Yes, the fonts are questionable in the eBay photograph. As another example, the 1 in 3179 of the eBay photo has no foot on it when compared to the legit stamping.

 

Oh the hard work of scammers...🤯

 

It would be nice to see the complete part # on the distributor, from what I can see the "9" does not have the correct font (where the upper loop intersects the back loop).

The carb stamping has obviously been doctored!

 

As others have already pointed out, especially the excellent explanation by tnswt,
both the Carb and Distributor are re-stamps.

 

What little I know about fake 7040256 carbs, comes from you, Devin. But it is always reassuring to hear you chime in. Trust you are well.
