SOLDI have a complete 3.42 SH code posi rear out of a 70 442. Its clean inside, the gears are nice with no chips and good wear marks. Not worn out, posi is tight and its a bolt in rear. Has some pitting on the housing and axle tubes but not terrible. Will need to be sanded and repainted to be really nice. Comes with drums, the brakes look usable but who knows how old they are.

Wait wait, 1970 had a different rear axle type than the 72 4-4-2 right?

I've got a 72 axle that i want to rebuild, but maybe it'd just be easier to dump in an O Type..

 

i put a type o 12bolt 3.42 in my 72.

 

and it bolted up just fine?? I'm still on the fence with this, my car drives well, but maybe it'd wake up a bit with hotter gears.

 

you will have to adjust the driveshaft length and u-joints to use
the type - o axle

at least i had to. i switched from a chevelle 12bolt to the 342

 

The 12-bolt O-axle rear has a shorter pinion snout,so it takes a longer driveshaft to reach it.
